[. . . ] re-paint · Quality improvement/cost savings 3M Industrial and Transportation Business Market: Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (AOEM) and Automotive Tier 1 Suppliers Application Description: Large area clearcoat repair. page 2 Process This application provides a system that allows AOEM's and their suppliers the opportunity to repair large defects within the clearcoat layer of the paint system. A large defect could be defined as an area equivalent to approximately 1-2 square feet. The types of defects that are typical of this area are orange peel, overspray and blend lines. Tech Tip: Due to the variety of layering systems present within the automotive marketplace, abrasive selection within all steps of these systems may vary slightly depending on the particular technology present within the account. [. . . ] · Sand the affected area using the overlap pattern as described in step Number 1 above. · Tech Tip: To ensure appropriate scratch refinement, avoid moving the tool too quickly. As a starting point, a velocity of approximately 6 to 12 inches per second is recommended. · Remove the sanding residue when complete with a Scotch-BriteTM High Performance Cloth. Market: Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (AOEM) and Automotive Tier 1 Suppliers Application Description: Large area clearcoat repair. page 3 Step Number 3 -- Buffing · Attach disc pad, 3MTM HookitTM Disc Pad (5" dia. ), to Dynabrade® Dynabuffer Model #57240. · Condition buff pad, 3MTM Finesse-itTM Buffing Pad, Orange Foam, 5¼". · Tech Tip: The buff pad only needs to be conditioned when it is new. To condition the buff pad, apply "chocolate chip" sized drops of the appropriate polish to the valleys on the buff pad. After the polish has been applied to the buff pad, fold the pad in half and apply pressure. Open the pad and rotate 90° then fold buff pad in half again and apply pressure. (See photos below. ) · Attach conditioned buff pad to disc pad. · Apply a "chocolate chip" size drop of polish, 3MTM Finesse-itTM Polish -- Extra Fine, to the sanded area. Use the buff pad to spread the polish evenly over the sanded area. · Position the buffer on the work surface and start the buffer. Apply medium pressure and polish using the overlap process as described in step Number 1. · Tech Tip: To assist in determining whether appropriate pressure is being applied, place two vertical lines, 180° apart, on the edge of the disc pad. While buffing, the lines should appear to be 1" apart. (See below. ) Stationary Running Lines should appear to be 1" apart 3 Hookit 3 Hookit Disc Pad Disc Pad · Keep the buff pad flat while buffing. Do not tip the buff pad on its edge or "Free Spins" the tool. · Tech Tip: If polish is being slung outside the repair area, either too much polish has been applied or insufficient pressure is being applied. · Polish time will vary depending on clearcoat technology.
