When it is necessary to fill the salt container, the display shows the message REFILL SALT . The message does not show while a washing programme operates. After you fill the salt container, the display can continue to show the message for some hours. This does not have an unwanted effect on the operation of the appliance It is correct that water comes out from the salt container when you fill it with salt.
