Dimensions do not contain values, only names and weights. Only the cubes constructed from dimensions contain values. You can use calculated elements as components of other calculated elements. Calculated values are not stored, but are calculated on demand. Therefore, they are always up-to-date. · · · · Creating and Updating Dimensions 8-23 Dimensions - A Summary 8-24 Applix TM1 Perspectives 9 - Creating Cubes Cubes are the database files that store information in TM1 Perspectives. You construct a cube by combining two to sixteen dimensions into a data matrix. Data is stored at the intersection of dimension elements within the matrix and is defined by the names of those dimension elements. For example, a cube containing the dimensions Region, Account and Month might contain a location to store data at the intersection of Northeast, Sales, and January. This chapter describes the process of manually creating cubes. This chapter also describes the Cube Wizard, a feature that automates the process of building cubes. 9-1 Creating Cubes Creating Cubes You create a cube by naming the cube and specifying the two or more dimensions that comprise the cube. When you create a string cube, the last dimension you specify must be a string dimension. Choose TM1 ¡ Cubes ¡ Create. The Create a Cube dialog box displays. 2. Type a name for the new cube and click OK. Cube names can contain up to eight characters. NOTE: If you enter the name of a cube that already exists, or select an existing cube from the list provided, Perspectives 9-2 Applix TM1 Perspectives Creating Cubes prompts for confirmation that you want to rebuild the cube. If you say yes, all data in the existing cube is erased. Use the drop-down lists in the Creating Cube dialog box to select the dimensions that define the cube. 4. After you select the appropriate dimensions, click OK to create the cube. Perspectives creates the cube file with a . tab extension. When a cube is created, it is an empty matrix containing no data. You can enter data from a Browse sheet, from a worksheet, or with TM1 Perspectives' import facilities. Creating Cubes 9-3 Use of RAM and Disk Space Use of RAM and Disk Space TM1 cubes are very compact and efficient. Cubes use only a fraction of the RAM and disk space of RDBMS or spreadsheet files containing the same amount of data.
