The procedures described are laid out by single operation, and each operation is indicated by a . The numbered parts shown in the figures are identified in the text by the number in parentheses or the symbol representing them. [. . . ] Develop a "feel" for shifting with your left toe. Never lug the engine, that is, running it at too low an rpm which can damage the vehicle's engine, and causes rough and juddering acceleration. u Rotate the throttle grip (2) clockwise (Pos. A), pull in the clutch lever (3) and lift the shift lever (4) straight up. Release the clutch lever (3) gently, and rotate the throttle counterclockwise to accelerate. u Repeat the last two operations to shift from second, to third, to fourth, to fifth, to sixth. order to increase the braking action by using the compression of the engine. u When riding uphill if the engine lugs down (rpm decreases). To shift down, proceed as follows: u Release the throttle grip (2) (Pos. A). u If necessary, apply both brakes lightly to slow down the vehicle. u Pull the clutch lever (3) and lower the gear shift lever (4) to shift down. u Release the brake levers if you have pulled them. u Release the clutch lever and accelerate moderately. (Pos. A), slow the vehicle with the brakes, pull in the clutch lever (3), depress the shift lever (4) with your toe, release the clutch. NOTE The cooling fans function only when the ignition key is in the " " (ON) position. 72 use and maintenance TUONO 1000 USA CAUTION Do not leave the ignition key on " " (OFF) since the cooling fans will not run regardless of the coolant temperature. This will cause the coolant temperature to continue to rise. If, before shutting off the engine, you hear the cooling fans functioning, stop the engine but leave the ignition key in the " " (ON) position. This will allow the cooling fans to draw air through the radiators, and lower the temperature. Turn the ignition key to " " (OFF) only when the cooling fans have stopped. Whenever the ignition key is turned to " " (ON), the right side of the multifunction display will show " SERVICE" for about three seconds. CAUTION If the " SERVICE" symbol is displayed during normal engine running, this means that the electronic unit has detected a fault. In many cases, the engine keeps running with reduced p e r fo r m a n c e l ev e l s ; i m m e d i a t e ly contact your Official aprilia dealer. If you stop uphill, use brakes only to slow the vehicle and to keep it in place. Slipping the clutch to keep the vehicle in one place on an uphill grade will very quickly ruin the clutch and overheat the engine. Before entering a turn, slow down, using the brakes and the engine, to a constant speed and then accelerate slightly through the turn. This can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. If the brakes are operated continuously on downhill grades, the discs and pads will overheat, reducing braking efficiency. [. . . ] As an alternative to recommended grease, use top brand roller bearing grease that will resist a temperature range of -30°C +140°C, with dripping point 150°C - 230°C, high corrosion protection, good resistance to water and oxidization. Battery lead protection: Neutral grease or Vaseline. Spray grease for chains (recommended): CHAIN SPRAY or CHAIN LUBE. Use new brake fluid only. Do not mix different makes or types of oil without having checked bases compatibility. [. . . ]
