! [. . . ] Remove the old stem,  noting how far the stem extended above the headset lock nut. This will help you evaluate your stem height when setting up your new stem. Lightly grease the quill of the stem and insert through the headset and into the steerer tube. Make sure that the MINIMUM INSERTION line is below the top of the headset and not visible. Remove the plastic quill plug and tighten the 6mm stem bolt just enough to keep it from turning easily in the steerer tube. Remove both of the 5mm handlebar clamp bolts and washers,  and the faceplate from the stem. Install the handlebar,  replacing the faceplate,  washers and the 5mm clamp bolts. Snugly tighten both handlebar clamp bolts,  making sure that the top and bottom gaps between the faceplate and stem are equal.
