TRAC OFF When the system is on and the parking brake is fully released, this warning light will come on to let you know if there's a problem with the system. See "Enhanced Traction System Warning Light" in the Index. When this warning light is on, the system will not limit wheel spin. To limit wheel spin, especially in slippery road conditions, you should always leave the Enhanced Traction System on. But you can turn the system off if you ever need to. (You should turn the system off if your vehicle ever getsstuck in sand, mud, ice or snow. See "Rocking Your Vehicle" in the Index. ) LOW TRAC The Enhanced Traction System operates in all transaxle shift lever positions. But the system can upshift the transaxle only as high as the shift lever position you've chosen, so you should use the lower gears only when necessary. See "Automatic Transaxle" in the Index. 4-11 0 To turn the system on or off, press the TRACTION button on the black panel located directly behind your automatictransaxle shift lever. Steering Power Steering If you lose power steering assist because the engine stops or the system is not functioning, you can steerbut it will take much more effort. Magnasteer TM When you turn the system off, the Enhanced Traction System warning light will come on and stay on. If the Enhanced Traction System is limiting wheel spin when you press the button to turn the system off, the warning light will come on -- but the system won't turn off right away. It will wait until there's no longer a currentneed to limit wheel spin. You can turn the system back on at any time by pressing the button again. The EnhancedTraction System warning light should go off. This steering system provides lighter steering effort for parking and when driving at low speeds. Steering effort will increase at higher speeds forimproved road feel. Steering Tips Driving on Curves It's important to take curves at a reasonable speed. A lot of the "driver lost control" accidentsmentioned on the news happen on curves. Here's why: Experienced driver or beginner, each of us is subject to the samelaws of physics when driving on curves. The traction of the tires against the road surface makes it possible for the vehicle to change its path when you turn the front wheels. If there's no traction, inertia will keep the vehicle going in the same direction. If you've ever tried to steer a vehicle on ice, you'll understand this. wet Braking in Emergencies With anti-lock, you can steer and brake at the same time. In many emergencies, steering can help you more than even the very best braking. The traction you can get in a curve depends on the condition of your tires and the road surface, the angle at in which the curve is banked, and your speed. While you're a curve, speed is the one factor you can control. Suppose you're steering througha sharp curve. Both control systems-- steering and acceleration -- have to do their work where the tires meet the road. Addingthe sudden acceleration can demand too much of those places.
