If you enter at an ordinary post office, Presort cannot automatically determine where to apply the DDU discount. You have to tell Presort in which ZIP Codes to apply the DDU discount. Get the range of eligible ZIP Codes from the postmaster of the delivery office. Information about entering these ZIP Codes into Presort is at "Automatic DDU versus setting ZIP ranges" on page 144. You may have to hold a USPS permit at each office where you enter mail. Ask your postmaster or USPS account representative about what you're required to do. 142 Presort User's Guide Standard, Auto CART For convenience, we use the term "Auto CART" to refer to letters in Standard Mail, Enhanced Carrier Route, Automation preparation. Earning the DDU discount on Auto CART mail is trickier than regular, nonautomated mail. The rules are different. Carrier-route letter scheme Discount rule Regular Auto This mail gets the DDU discount if you drop at the delivery office, as described above. This mail gets the DDU discount if you drop at the office where the mail will be put through a barcode sorter. That might be the same place as the delivery office, if you're mailing into a medium-size or large city (where the delivery office has a barcode sorter). It's different if you're mailing into a small town where there's no barcode sorter. Auto CART mail for many small towns is routed through the nearest SCF. At the SCF, letters are put through a barcode sorter into carrier sequence. Trays of mail ready for delivery are then sent from the SCF to the surrounding small towns. Since the USPS needs Auto CART letters to be sorted at the SCF, they give you a DDU incentive to enter mail there, rather than at the delivery office in the small town. Presort cannot automatically determine where to apply the DDU discount to Auto CART mail. You have to tell Presort in which ZIP Codes to apply the DDU discount. Start by contacting your USPS drop-shipment coordinator. (Get the phone number from your postmaster or USPS account rep. ) Ask the coordinator where you can claim DDU discounts on Auto CART mail. Chapter 6: Multiple entry points 143 Automatic DDU versus setting ZIP ranges To instruct Presort to use USPS data to determine eligibility or to define the ZIP ranges yourself, go to the Entry Point Description section. Turn on this option to claim the discount. Turn on this option if it's all right for Presort to determine where to apply the DDU discount. If you have to manually set the DDU areas, turn off the DDU option, and enter the ZIP ranges 144 Presort User's Guide How to link schemes to entry points In most cases, you will want Presort to apply each presort scheme in your job to each entry point. For example, say we are preparing a Standard Mail Enhanced Carrier-Route letter job with pieces destined for the Quad Cities SCF, the Cedar Rapids SCF, and the Des Moines BMC. We would set up our job with the following schemes in this order: 1. [. . . ] During a USPS audit, you may be required to provide a count of the number of mail pieces that you mail to each 3-digit ZIP Code, and to show that the proper discount was applied to each piece. You can use postage statements to show the counts per zone. These counts can be verified against the zones listed by ZoneShow.
