Components in the lens move, reducing the field of view and making the object appear closer. With digital zoom, the camera uses interpolation with a small section of an image (the 'zoomed' portion) to artificially restore the file to its original size. When using the zoom function, a red and white bar appears on the LCD screen to the left. The bottom section displays the optical zoom level, while the top section displays the digital zoom level. A white square moves up and down the red and white bar to indicate the current zoom level.
