Use 1" x 5/16" Slotted Bolts and 5/16" Safety Nuts. The bolt passes first through the Metal Bracket, then through the Top Ladder Rail into the Safety Nut. With a helper, raise the end of the Top Ladder and bolt it to the INSIDE of the Swing Mount Balusters you attached earlier in Steps 26. Use two 4-1/2" x 5/16" Carriage Bolts and 5/16" Safety Nuts at Point B. The bolts pass first through the Swing Mount Balusters, then through the Metal Brackets, and finally through the Top Ladder rail. Make sure the Top Ladder is horizontal before attaching any more bolts. If it is not 25 close to perfectly horizontal, have a helper hold the End Ladder off the ground (the whole Top and End Ladder assembly will pivot on the bolts at Point B) while you dig or pound the earth below the End Ladder down. Allow the bottom of the End Ladder to settle into the depressions until the Top Ladder is horizontal. Now install two 4-1/2" x 5/16" Carriage Bolts and 5/16" Safety Nuts at each Point C. The bolts pass first through the Swing Mount Balusters, then through the Metal Brackets, and finally through the Top Ladder rail. Now go back and securely tighten all eight Bolts and Safety Nuts. If you have had to dig the bottom of the End Ladder into the ground to make the Top Ladder horizontal (see Step 30), select the higher hole for attachment of the Base Piece. After installation, your Top Ladder should be as horizontal as possible. 26 Illustration 33 3" x 1/4" Bolts Locate the Base Piece and Diagonal Braces for the End Ladder in Box #8. Bolt the Base Piece to the OUTSIDE bottom of the End Ladder using two 4-1/2" x 1/4" Carriage Bolts and 1/4" Safety Nuts. Loosely bolt the bottom of the Diagonal Braces to the ends of the Base Piece. Use two 2-1/2" x 1/4" Carriage Bolts and 1/4" Safety Nuts. NOTE that the Diagonal Braces MUST bolt to the Base Piece on the same side as the End Ladder. [. . . ] INSTALL THE FLOORBOARDS Follow the instructions in Steps 12 and 13 starting on page 11.
