[. . . ] In normal operation, automotive brake systems may emit occasional or intermittent squeal or groan noises when the brakes are applied. Such noises are usually heard during the first few brake applications in the morning; however, they may be heard at any time while braking and can be aggravated by environmental conditions such as cold, heat, moisture, road dust, salt or mud. If a "metal-to-metal, " "continuous grinding" or "continuous squeal" sound is present while braking, the brake linings may be worn-out and should be inspected by a qualified service technician. Anti-lock brake system (ABS) (if equipped) On vehicles equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), a noise from the hydraulic pump motor and pulsation in the pedal may be observed during ABS braking events. Pedal pulsation coupled with noise while braking under panic conditions or on loose gravel, bumps, wet or snowy roads is normal and indicates proper functioning of the vehicle's anti-lock brake system. If the vehicle has continuous vibration or shudder in the steering wheel while braking, the vehicle should be inspected by a qualified service technician. The ABS operates by detecting the onset of wheel lockup during brake applications and compensating for this tendency. The wheels are prevented from locking even when the brakes are firmly applied. The accompanying illustration depicts the advantage of an ABS equipped vehicle (on bottom) to a non-ABS equipped vehicle (on top) during hard braking with loss of front braking traction. 83 Driving ABS warning lamp The ABS warning lamp in the instrument cluster illuminates for about five seconds when starting the vehicle. If an ABS fault is detected, the light will remain on, the ABS system is disabled with normal braking still effective, and your vehicle should be serviced as soon as possible. Normal braking is still effective BRAKE unless the BRAKE warning lamp is also illuminated. ! P Using ABS · In an emergency or when maximum efficiency from the ABS is required, apply continuous full force on the brake. The ABS will be activated immediately, thus allowing you to retain full steering control of your vehicle and, providing there is sufficient space, will enable you to avoid obstacles and bring the vehicle to a controlled stop. · The Anti-Lock system does not decrease the time necessary to apply the brakes or always reduce stopping distance. Always leave enough room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you to stop. · We recommend that you familiarize yourself with this braking technique. However, avoid taking any unnecessary risks. Parking brake with auto-release Apply the parking brake whenever the vehicle is parked. The BRAKE warning lamp in the instrument cluster illuminates and remains illuminated (when the ignition is turned ON) until the parking brake is fully released. HOOD Always set the parking brake fully and make sure the gearshift is latched in P (Park). Turn off the ignition whenever you leave your vehicle. 84 Driving The parking brake is not designed to stop a moving vehicle. However, if the normal brakes fail, the parking brake can be used to stop your vehicle in an emergency. Since the parking brake applies only the rear brakes, the vehicle's stopping distance will increase greatly and the handling of your vehicle will be adversely affected. [. . . ] Rear axles are considered lubricated for life when the vehicle is used for normal service. See your "Service Guide" for Severe Duty requirements. 146 Capacities and specifications LUBRICANT SPECIFICATIONS Item Brake fluid Ford part name Ford part number C6AZ-19542-AB Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A and DOT 3 ESR-M13P4-A High Performance DOT 3 Motor Vehicle Brake Fluid Door Silicone Lubricant C0AZ-19553-AA weatherstrips and D7AZ-19553-AA Engine Ford Premium E2FZ-19549-AA coolant Engine Coolant (green in color) Ford Extended Life F6AZ-19544-AA Engine Coolant (orange in color) Engine oil Motorcraft 5W30 XO-5W30-QSP Super Premium Motor Oil Hinges, latches, striker plates, fuel filler door hinge and seat tracks Lock cylinders Power steering fluid Automatic transmission (4R70W) Multi-Purpose Grease ESE-M97B44-A WSS-M97B44-D or DEX-COOL equivalent WSS-M2C153-G with API Certification Mark DOAZ-19584-AA ESB-M1C93-B or or ESR-M1C159-A F5AZ-19G209-AA Penetrating Lubricant Motorcraft MERCON ATF Motorcraft MERCON V ATF E8AZ-19501-B XT-2-QDX XT-5-QM none MERCON MERCON V 147 Capacities and specifications Item Rear axle1 Ford part name Ford part number XY-80W90-QL Ford specification WSL-M2C197-A Windshield washer fluid 1 Motorcraft Premium Rear Axle Lubricant Ultra-Clear C9AZ-19550-AB Windshield Washer Concentrate ESR-M17P5-A Add 118 ml (4 oz. ) of additive friction modifier C8AZ-19B546A, Ford specification EST-M2C118A for complete refill of Traction-Lok axles.
