By connecting the X-18 to a PC via this connector, you can control the current memory card of the X-18 from the PC and transfer audio files to the PC. See "Chapter 6: Exporting audio file to a PC" starting from page 69 for details about audio file export/import. <Notes> · To use the X-18 with a personal computer, make the USB mode active using the "USB Device Mode" item on the "Setup" menu in the MENU mode. · A USB cable is not supplied with the X-18. Purchase a commercially available appropriate USB cable which conforms to the USB port standard. X-18 Field Memory Recorder (Chapter 5: Recording/playback) About recording system The X-18 uses the FAT32 (File Allocation Table 32) file system and supports the most common BWF (Broadcast Wave File) and MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer3) file formats. The X-18 uses the "1 take - 1 file" system. The filter is effective to both the L and R channels. <Tip>: You can also make HPF on/off setting using the "HPF" item on the "Setup" menu in the MENU mode (see page 92). Phantom power on/off setting (if needed) The "P48" item in the quick setup mode allows you to select on or off for the phantom power (the default is "Off"). If you make recording using a condenser microphone which requires the phantom power, set this item to "ON". The phantom power is supplied to the [ANALOG IN] XLR connectors of the L and R channels. <Tip>: You can also make phantom power on/off setting using the "Phantom" item on the "Setup" menu in the MENU mode (see page 95). Recording source selection (must) The "SRC" item in the quick setup mode allows you to select the recording source between an external source fed to the [ANALOG IN] connector or the internal microphones. When you use the internal microphones, you can select high or low sensitivity according to the sound source level or the distance between the sound source and the unit. INPUT (default) I. MIC H An external source fed to the [ANALOG IN] connector The internal microphones at low sensitivity (16 dB) The internal microphones at high sensitivity (32 dB) <Tip>: You can also make recording source selection using the "Source sel" item on the "Setup" menu in the MENU mode (see page 94). <Note>: When you make recording using the internal microphones, the [MIC TRIM] and the recording level controls are not effective. 57 X-18 Field Memory Recorder (Chapter 5: Recording/playback) Using the menu mode You can make setting of the following preference items other than the four items in the quick setup mode using the "Setup" menu in the MENU mode. Default file name setting (if needed) When you starts recording, an audio file is newly created on the memory card and its file name is automatically given. The file name can be set using the "File Name Mode" and "Def. File Name" items on the "Setup" menu in the MENU mode. By default, the "File Name Mode" item is set to "Date" and the time information when you start recording is given as the default file name, as shown in the example below. · Example of BWF recording: B15h 20m 35s 20jan 2007. wav · Example of MP3 recording: B15h 20m 35s 20jan 2007. mp3 By changing the "File Name Mode" item to "Take" or "Reel", the file name is given as below. When "Take" is selected: · Example of BWF recording: Scene Name + Take Number. wav · Example of MP3 recording: Scene Name + Take Number. mp3 The Scene name and take number are specified by the "Def. File Name" item on the "Setup" menu. When "Reel" is selected: · Example of BWF recording: Reel Number + File Number. wav · Example of MP3 recording: Reel Number + File Number. mp3 <Tip>: You can change file names of an audio file later by using the "Rename" item on the "File" menu in the MENU mode (see page 81 for details). Pre record function on/off setting (if needed) Pre record function allows recording to start with two-second audio data captured in the buffer. This prevents missing the start of a take.
