[. . . ] It is possible to continue laying pipe past a fountain to connect others further inland; however, additional fountains only have a limited supply of water. These faulty fountains will constantly alternate between filling and draining; their benefits to the city will come and go with the water. This can be rectified somewhat by connecting more than one reservoir to a fountain. NOTE: As mentioned earlier, Bath Houses are also very important to the quality of life of any civilized Roman; while not water sources themselves, they rely on water to function. You can read about them in the previous chapter. WALLS are, aside from the soldiers produced by Barracks, your last line of defense against Barbarians. Primarily, the Great Walls and Cohorts on the Provincial level should take care of barbarian incursions, but a complete and intact system of city walls will keep barbarians from destroying city property. Walls can be built over roads and pipes; gates will appear when crossing a road. Gates are weaker than walls, and are more likely to break when attacked by a barbarian. They are manned by local militia, and therefore help to quiet unrest in the immediate area. They raise land values slightly in the immediate area; however, as a military force, they also set a limit on how high land values can rise around them. To build walls, press and hold the left mouse button, and drag the pointer along the path you want them to go. If you are satisfied with the job you did, then release the button to confirm the action; otherwise, press the right mouse button while still holding down the left, and the walls will disappear. Building a section of wall costs 5 Denarii. TOWERS increase the strength of city walls. A barbarian will have a greatly reduced chance of breaking through a city wall if a tower is built nearby. Note that towers are not free-standing structures; they must be built where a wall section already exists. However, they cannot be built on three-way or four-way intersections. Building a Tower on a wall section costs 10 Denarii. PREFECTURES are something like the Roman equivalent of police stations. Peacekeepers, tax collectors and other officials work out of them to extend the reach and authority of the government namely, you past the confines of your Fora (see below).
