Refer to the appropriate software user's guides for more detailed information for function key definitions. Embedded Numeric Keypad An embedded numeric keypad consists of 15 keys that make number intensive input more convenient. These keys have both numeric and cursor movement functions, which are labeled in blue on the keycaps. When the numeric keypad is engaged, the Num Lock icon will appear in the System Window. The keypad is activated in one of two ways: 1. While holding down the [Fn] key, press the [F8] key to toggle the numeric keypad on and off. A second way is to temporarily activate the numeric keypad by holding down the [Fn] key when the Num Lock state is on. The numeric keys will be active as long as you hold down the [Fn] key. 47 Notebook User's Guide Figure 3-3: The Embedded Numeric Keypad Hot Keys for System Control The following table lists the hot key functions for the Notebook computer. Toggles the embedded cursor/numeric keypad on and off Pressing this hot key combination will cause the system to enter Hibernate mode. Pressing this hot key combination will cause the system to enter Standby mode. Pressing this hot key combination will cause the system to Suspend to RAM. 48 Chapter 3: Operation The System Status Window Located above the keyboard, the System Status window informs you of the Notebook's current operating status at a glance. Please see Figure 1-4 to locate this display. Upon activating a certain function, a symbol or icon corresponding to that function will appear in the system window until you deactivate that feature. The symbol will remain in the window indicating that the feature is engaged. Figure 3-4 shows the "System Status window" with all the symbols that can be displayed. A description of each of the icons is listed below. Figure 3-4: The System Window Notice the first icon that appears in the left of the System Status window consists of five separate symbols. They are explained in detail in the order in which they appear. Caps Lock Upon pressing the [Caps Lock] key, this icon appears in the System Status window indicating that the Caps Lock feature is engaged. Press the [Caps Lock] key again to deactivate this feature and turn off the icon. Num Lock Upon pressing the [Scr Lk/Nm Lk] key, this icon appears in the System Status window indicating the embedded keypad's numeric feature is activated. Press the [Scr Lk/Nm Lk] key again to deactivate this feature and turn off the icon. Pad Lock The pad lock or keypad icon appears in the System Status window when you press the Notebook's [Fn] key indicating the keypad's cursor function is engaged. The icon disappears when you release the [Fn] key indicating the cursor function is no longer activated. Another way to turn the keypad icon on is by pressing the [Fn] + [F8] keys. [. . . ] Try using a system floppy diskette to make sure the operating system will load properly. If it doesn't, contact your support representative. The LCD Display Question: Answer: I know the Notebook is on, but the LCD screen is blank. More than likely, the screen contrast or brightness controls are improperly adjusted or you've accidentally put the computer into Suspend Mode by pressing the Suspend/Resume switch. Press the button again to reactivate the screen. [. . . ]
