EXAMPLE ­ (bold type) indicates a specific remote control or front-panel button, or rear-panel connection jack EXAMPLE ­ (OCR type) indicates a message that is visible on-screen or on the front-panel information display EXAMPLE ­ (Synchro type) indicates a message that is displayed on the remote control's LCD screen 1 ­ (number in a square) indicates a specific front-panel control A ­ (letter in a square) indicates a front-panel control that is normally concealed behind the drop-down door ¡ ­ (number in a circle) indicates a rear-panel connection a ­ (number in an oval) indicates a button or indicator on the remote å ­ (letter in an oval) indicates a button on the Zone II remote See trademark acknowledgements on page 51. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION Thank You for Choosing Harman Kardon® With the purchase of a Harman Kardon AVR 630, you are about to begin many years of listening enjoyment. The AVR 630 has a wide range of features and options that accommodate virtually any combination of speakers, room size and program sources. It is as easy to operate as it is to set up, but in order to take maximum advantage of the many advanced technologies within your new AVR, it is strongly recommended that you take a few minutes to read this owner's manual. [. . . ] The output levels may also be adjusted at any time using the remote control and semi-OSD system. To adjust the output levels in this fashion, press the Test Button f. As soon as the button is pressed, the test tone will begin to circulate as indicated earlier. The correct channel from which the test noise should be heard will be shown in the lower third of the video screen and in the Lower Display Line $. While the 28 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION OPERATION Basic Operation Once you have completed the initial setup and configuration of the AVR 630, it is simple to operate and enjoy. The following instructions will help you maximize the enjoyment of your new receiver: Turning the AVR 630 On or Off · When using the AVR 630 for the first time, you must press the Main Power Switch A to turn the unit on. This places the unit in a Standby mode, as indicated by the amber illumination surrounding the Standby/On Switch 1. Once the unit is in Standby, you may begin a listening session by pressing the Standby/On Switch 1 on the front panel, or the Power On Button b or AVR Selector e on the remote. This will turn the unit on and return the AVR to the input source that was last used. The unit may also be turned on from Standby by pressing any of the Input Selector Buttons dXhç on the remote or the Input Source Selector Button 7 on the front panel. Whenever the AVR is turned on, you will see all of the front-panel indicators light up for a few seconds. This is normal, and it is part of the unit's power-on self test procedure. NOTE: After pressing one of the Input Selector Buttons dXhç to turn the unit on, press the AVR Selector e to set the remote control to the AVR 630 functions. To turn the unit off at the end of a listening session, simply press the Standby/On Switch 1 on the front panel or the Power Off Button aå on the remote. Power will be shut off to any equipment plugged into the rear-panel Switched AC Accessory Outlet / and the illumination around the Standby/ On Switch 1 will turn amber. When the remote is used to turn the unit "off, " it is actually placing the system in a Standby mode, as indicated by the amber lighting around the Standby/On Switch 1. · To program the AVR 630 for automatic turn-off, press the Sleep Button S on the remote. Each press of the button will decrease the time before shut-down in the following sequence: and hold the Sleep ButtonS until the information display returns to normal brightness; the Sleep indicator numbers will disappear and the words SLEEP OFF will appear in the Lower Display Line $. When you will be away from home for an extended period of time, it is always a good idea to completely turn the unit off with the front-panel Main Power Switch A. NOTE: All preset memories are lost if the unit is left turned off by using the Main Power Switch A for more than four weeks. 6-Channel/8-Channel Direct Input · There are four input choices available for use with sources such as a DVD-Audio or SACD player that are connected to the 8-Channel Direct Inputs 40 . Select the appropriate input according to the way your system and source equipment is configured: The Source Selection · To select a source, press any of the Input Selector Buttons dXhç on the remote. [. . . ] · The LCD display will remain on for ten seconds after a key is pressed and then turn off to conserve battery life. · When any button is held for more than thirty seconds, the LCD will turn off and the remote will stop transmitting the codes to conserve battery life. Figure 78 Additional Notes on Configuring and Operating the Remote · When the remote is being programmed, it will automatically time-out if no button is pressed within a thirty-second period. The message shown in Figure 80 will appear briefly, and the remote will then exit the feature being programmed and any data entered will be lost. CONFIGURING THE REMOTE 49 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE SYMPTOM Unit does not function when Main Power Switch is pushed CAUSE · No AC Power SOLUTION · Make certain AC power cord is plugged into a live outlet · Check to see whether outlet is switch-controlled · Make certain that all input and speaker connections are secure · Press Mute Button 33 · Turn up volume control · Follow the instructions in the Display Brightness section on page 36 so that the display is set to VFD FULL · Check speaker wire connections for shorts at receiver and speaker ends · Contact your local Harman Kardon service center Display lights, but no sound or picture · Intermittent input connections · Mute is on · Volume control is down Unit turns on, but front-panel display does not light up No sound from any speaker; light around power switch is red · Display brightness is turned off · Amplifier is in protection mode due to possible short · Amplifier is in protection mode due to internal problems · Incorrect surround mode · Input is monaural · Incorrect configuration · Stereo or Mono program material No sound from surround or center speakers · Select a mode other than Stereo · There is no surround information from mono sources · Check speaker mode configuration · The surround decoder may not create center- or rear-channel information from non-encoded programs · Change remote batteries · Press the AVR selector · Make certain front-panel sensor is visible to remote or connect remote sensor · Move unit or antenna away from computers, fluorescent lights, motors or other electrical appliances · Resume play for DVD · Check that Digital Input is selected Unit does not respond to remote commands · Weak batteries in remote · Wrong device selected · Remote sensor is obscured Intermittent buzzing in tuner · Local interference Letters flash in the channel indicator display and digital audio stops · Digital audio feed paused Processor Reset In the rare case where the unit's operation or the displays seem abnormal, the cause may involve the erratic operation of the system's memory or microprocessor. To correct this problem, first unplug the unit from the AC wall outlet and wait at least three minutes. [. . . ]
