Hitachi's Black Level Enhancer shifts the level of the black signal, which extends from 0% to about 20% of the image signal, to match it to the blackest level. This blackens the parts that appear gray due to the "floating" black, without altering the bright parts, thus ensuring a clear contrast between light and shade.
