[. . . ] The computer automatically enters standby or hibernation mode when the battery is depleted. Connect the ac adapter to the computer, and press Fn. The computer does not return from standby mode, or the standby indicator stays on and the computer does not work. Chapter 3. Solving computer problems 25 Hardware troubleshooting Problem When you are using the port replicator, resuming normal operation from hibernation or standby mode takes a long time. Cause and action If the Ethernet port is enabled, but the port replicator is not connected to a network, resuming operation can take a long time. The computer queries the Ethernet until the timeout timer stops the query. If you want to access the Ethernet, connect the network cable. If you are not using the network, disable the Ethernet connector as follows: For Windows 98: 1. Double-click the System icon in the Control Panel. Double-click Intel EtherExpress PRO PCI Adapter. Mark the check box for Disable in this hardware profile. Restart the computer. For Windows NT: 1. Your computer does not enter standby or hibernation mode. Double-click the System icon in the Control Panel. Select Intel EtherExpress PRO Adapter, and click Startup. . . . Restart the computer by turning it off and on again. Check whether any option has been selected to disable your computer from entering standby or hibernation mode. 26 IBM ThinkPad T20 User's Reference Hardware troubleshooting Problem The computer does not enter standby mode after the interval set on the timer under Windows 98 or Windows NT. Cause and action For Windows 98: The generic CD-ROM or DVD-ROM driver for Windows 98 accesses the internal CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive every 3 seconds to see whether a CD-ROM is inserted in the CD-ROM drive or the DVD-ROM drive. This prevents your computer from entering standby mode even after a timeout. To prevent this from occurring, do the following: 1. Move the cursor to Settings and Control Panel. Click Control Panel, and then double-click System. Double-click the name of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Clear the Auto insert notification check box. Windows 98 no longer detects a CD-ROM or a DVD-ROM automatically. For Windows NT: If you enable the CD-ROM AutoRun feature, the timer does not send the computer into standby mode. To enable the timer in this situation, edit the configuration information in the registry as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\Services¥Cdrom\ Autorun: x1 > Autorun: Chapter 3.
