GATE Gated reverbs were created by feeding a reverb, such as a metal plate, through an analog gate device. Decay time was set to instant, while hold time varied duration and sound. The Gate programs provide a fairly constant sound with no decay until the reverb is cut off abruptly. These programs work well on percussion, particularly on snare and toms. Stereo Chamber programs produce even, relatively dimensionless reverberation with little color change as sound decays. The initial diffusion is similar to Hall programs. However, the sense of size and space is much less obvious. It is commonly used to add a room sound to recorded music and speech. In music recording, Ambience can realistically add distance to close-mic'ed signals. Ambience programs simulate reflections from room surfaces with random reflections, a gradual decay of overall level, and a gradual narrowing of bandwidth. In these programs, the Mix control adds depth - emulating the movement of a coincident pair of microphones away from the sound source into the room.
