Partitioning the drive Partitioning a drive divides the space into different areas which can be accessed as separate logic drives (with letters C:, D:, E: etc. ). Read the manual of your operating system to find out how to partition hard drives with your particular system. Formatting the drive In order to remove data from the hard disk, the partitions must be formatted. You must be totally sure about which drive letter to enter so that you don't format a drive that contains data you wish to keep.
