Detailed instructions for use are in the User's Guide.

[. . . ] In addition, Nikon Integrated Coating (NIC) is applied to all air-to-glass surfaces of the lens elements to minimize ghost images and flare and produce photographs with natural color rendition. The lens offers "automatic maximum aperture indexing" (AI) with suitably equipped cameras, via the meter coupling ridge provided Position the lens in the camera's bayonet mount, aligning the green aperture index on the lens with the lens mounting index on the camera. Then, twist the lens counterclockwise until it clicks into place. [. . . ] Once in the macro mode, focusing is done by moving the focusing/zooming ring in and out. To preset the reproduction ratio, first turn the focusing/zooming ring to the closest focusing distance of 1. 4m, then turn the macro ring all the way to the left until the orange M is opposite the green aperture index; now by zooming the lens in or out, the orange triangle indicates the reproduction ratio setting. At the 35mm setting, continuous close focusing is possible from 1. In the macro mode, fine focusing can also be accomplished by turning the macro ring back and forth. To return the lens to the normal focusing mode, turn the macro ring in the opposite direction of the arrow all the way to the right unitl you hear a click. C= Acceptable focusing Slight vignetting (or moire phenomenon, in the case of the microprism) affects the screen image. The image on the film, however, shows no trace of this. Note: The Teleconverters TC-301, TC-300, TC-14B and TC-14 cannot be attached to this lens. ELECTRONIC FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY FG VARIABLE APERTURE FG As the lens is zoomed from 35mm to 105mm, the aperture decreases approx. This variation is indicated by two aperture indexes engraved on the chrome mounting ring: the green index is for use with the lens at the 35mm setting, while the brown one is for the 105mm setting. For intermediate focal length settings, align the aperture ring between the green and brown aperture indexes. When this zoom lens is used with cameras having through-the-lens (TTL) metering, you can forget about adjusting the aperture. However, when an independent exposure meter is used, slight adjustment is required, depending on the focal length setting. Diagram 1 When used with a Nikon camera and Speedlight having the capability for automatic TTL control of the flash exposure (such as the Nikon F3 and SB-16A), the variation in aperture is usually automatically taken care of. However, when the Flash-to-subject distance is close to either the near or far limit of the auto shooting range corresponding to your working aperture, you should readjust the aperture, if the lens is zoomed to a different focal length. Also, when regular (non-TTL) automatic exposure or-manual control is used, slight readjustment of the aperture is necessary. [. . . ] €¢ Attach both the front and rear caps when the lens is stored separately. €¢ To ensure proper fit of the lens when stored in the leather lens case, set the lens' focusing ring to the infinity (°») setting. €¢ Be careful not to get the lens wet or drop it in water.
