[. . . ] 39 12-1 To use Nikon Scan as a "stand-alone" application: Windows Click the Start button and select Nikon Scan 3. 1 from Programs > Nikon Scan 3. 1. Macintosh Open the folder to which you installed Nikon Scan (the default location is in the path Nikon Software : Nikon Scan 3. 1 on the start-up disk) and double-click the Nikon Scan 3. 1 icon. 12-2 Place film in the holder. The kind of film that can be used depends on the holder; the scanning process is illustrated in this section using the FH-835S strip-film holder provided with your scanner. For information on inserting film in the holder, see "Reference: Holders" ( 68). 40 12-3 After confirming that the status LED is glowing steadily and that the sliding cover on the front of the scanner is fully open, slide a holder into the holder slot as shown below, with the inser tion guide up and pointing toward the scanner. Once the holder has been inserted as far as the insertion guide, the scanner's loading mechanism will be activated and the holder will be fed into the scanner automatically. Remove your hands from the holder when loading star ts. Inser tion guide Loading will stop when the holder is in scanning position. Caution Holders can not be inserted into the scanner if the sliding cover is not fully open. When inserting holders in the scanner, do not use force. When a holder is inserted, the scanner readies the loading mechanism. Removing the holder or otherwise interfering with loading can cause scanning errors. Do not attempt to forcibly remove the holder during or after loading. When ejecting the holder, always use the button on the front of the scanner or the eject button in the Nikon Scan scan window. If the holder does not load automatically when inserted, remove the holder and try again. Before insertion, remove any dust or lint with a blower. 41 12-4 Choose the type of film to be scanned from the Nikon Scan media-type menu. 12-5 Choose a color model from the color-model menu. Calibrated RGB is the best choice in most circumstances. The Grayscale option is for use when scanning black-and-white (monochrome) film, while CMYK is intended for professionals who wish to create a file ready for printing on an industrial four-color printer. Pg. 26 42 For more information on: Making a scan 12-6 Unless you are using the FH-869GR glass-covered rotating film holder (available separ ately), you can choose the frames to be scanned from the thumbnail drawer. Click the thumbnail drawer tab to open the thumbnail drawer. Thumbnail drawer tab By default, frames are identified by number only. Click here to display and hide thumbnails 43 If the thumbnail drawer is too small to display all the frames at once, you can enlarge the drawer by dragging its lower right corner or use the scroll slider to view frames that do not fit it in the drawer. To select multiple frames, click each frame in turn while holding down the control (Windows) or command (Macintosh) key, or hold down the shift key while clicking two images to select the images and all frames between them.
