JPEGs use a lossy compression, which means that every time you save an image, some of the original image data will be lost. JPEGs store images in 24-bit color (GIFs use 8 bits or less) allowing you to save millions of colors. Consequently, JPEGs are better suited for photographs and images with fine gradations of tone and color. A pixel (a picture element) is the smallest unit of space in a computer image or display. Each pixel is a tiny square that has a specific location and color. Every image on your computer is made up of a colored grid of pixels. Your digital camera records pixels, your scanner transfers a physical image to your computer in terms of pixels, SmartDraw Photo creates and edits pixels, your computer monitor displays everything in terms of pixels, and a web browser displays images in terms of pixels. In the digital world, inches don't exist. The key to editing, scanning, and printing images, is understanding how pixels transform into inches and vice versa. Resolution is the interpreter between the physical world of inches and the digital world of pixels. When you scan an image, the scanner translates inches into pixels using resolution. When you print an image, the printer translates pixels into inches using resolution. A Digital Camera's Resolution A camera's resolution is defined in terms of megapixels. Most digital cameras capture images on a CCD (charge coupled device) sensor. The camera's resolution is calculated by multiplying the number of pixels along the length and width of the sensor for a total of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 6 million pixels or megapixels. A camera with a two megapixel resolution will create an image that has about two million pixels. When you buy a camera, you'll notice that there is a maximum and usually two lower resolution settings for taking pictures. These numbers are expressed in terms of two pixel dimensions such as 1600 x 1200 or 800 x 600. Optimal Camera Resolution Your optimal resolution will always depend on your intent.
