[. . . ] . ELITECONNECT WLAN SECURITY SYSTEM Full authentication support--supports RADIUS, LDAP, 802. 1x, Kerberos, Windows NT/2000 domain and built-in database. VPN support allows secure wireless communications to and from wireless clients. Rights-based network access increases network security by providing network administrators full control on users' access to a network, based on user identification, location, and time. Web-based configuration is easy-to-use, convenient and provides simple configuration management. [. . . ] You can either arrange for DHCP to always assign the same IP address to a WLAN Secure Server, or you can manually enter a static IP address. The Access Manager function of a WLAN Secure Server need not be separately configured; it shares the WLAN Secure Server Configuration. You can perform the network installation of the WLAN Access Manager in one of three ways--by DHCP, using the Command Line Interface (CLI) through the serial console port, or using a web browser and the administrative user interface. Your personal experience with similar networking equipment will define your preference. Caution: It is not safe to broadcast the shared secret over your network if there is any chance at all of an unauthorized person sniffing the shared secret. Only use this method if you are absolutely sure you have a secure network and a trustworthy user community. SMC EliteConnect WLAN Security System Installation Manual 4-3 4. 2 Installation Using DHCP If you choose to install the WLAN Access Manager using DHCP, you must be familiar with the configuration of your DHCP server. This server must be configured to assign to the Access Manager the parameters previously defined in Table 4-1. Appendix B describes procedures to make your DHCP server assign these SMC-specific options. Follow these steps Step 1. Connect the Access Manager Network Uplink port to your network (Figure 4-1). Figure 4-1. Connecting the Access Manager Through the Uplink Port Step 2. Verify that you can access the administration interface from a browser running on a computer system connected to your network through the fully-qualified hostname: https://<fully-qualified hostname> or https://<IP Address> if you did not assign a hostname to the Access Manager. 4-4 WLAN Access Manager Network Installation WLAN Security System You will be prompted for the Administrator Username and Password with the Administrator Login screen (Figure 4-2). Figure 4-2. Login ID and Password Prompt Step 4. For both the Username and Password, enter admin, and click Login. The Main Menu (Figure 4-3) appears. Figure 4-3. If you have not used DHCP to set the IP address and shared secret of the WLAN Secure Server, do so now by clicking on Control Server in the Main Menu, and enter the Control Server IP Address, Secret Key, and Confirm Secret Key. shared secret in the screen of Figure 4-4. . Figure 4-4. Entering the IP and Shared Secret Step 6. Complete configuration according to instructions in the User Manual-- Location Information, and Time and Date. Complete the installation as described in Section 4. 5, "Completing the Installation, " at the end of this chapter. 4-6 WLAN Access Manager Network Installation WLAN Security System 4. 3 4. 3. 1 Installation Using the Command Line Interface Connecting to a Serial Console To use the Command Line Interface (CLI), you need a cable from the serial port male DB9 connector on the WLAN Access Manager to a serial console. Connecting an Access Manager to a Serial Console Typically, the serial console is a terminal emulator running on another management computer that is usually equipped with a male DB9 port. If your management computer is so equipped, you would use a female DB9 to female DB9 crossover serial cable (also known as a null modem cable) to connect the two devices. Configure the serial port on your management computer at 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, with hardware flow control. Table 4-2 shows the pin assignments for this serial connector, and Figure 4-6 shows the pin configuration.
