This user guide provides detailed information on all aspects of using your new VAIO computer, from keyboard functions to preinstalled software programs. For Sony software information, click Start and select Welcome to VAIO life. Page 1 Ergonomics and Caring for Your Computer This section provides information on how to safely use your Sony computer. Page 2 Applying Ergonomics Your computer is a portable device and can be used in a variety of environments. Whenever possible, you should apply the following ergonomic considerations: Position of your computer -- Place the computer directly in front of you as you work. [. . . ] Turn off the computer, and disconnect all attached devices. Place the port replicator on a stable surface, and pull out the extendable support arm, which is located on the front edge of the port replicator. Pulling Out the Extendable Support Arm 4. On the bottom of the computer, slide the port replicator cover down until the port replicator connector is completely visible. Sliding the Port Replicator Cov er 5. Slip the back edges of the computer into the raised edges on the port replicator. Connecting the Port Replicator Page 116 6. Gently push the computer onto the port replicator until it clicks into place. Make sure the port replicator is securely fastened to the computer. Securing the Port Replicator 7. Plug the AC adapter into the DC IN port on the port replicator, and plug the power cord into the AC adapter and an AC outlet. The power indicator on the port replicator turns on. 8. Press the Power button to turn on the computer. Page 117 Connecting a Flat-Panel Display The port replicator includes Digital Visual Interface (DVI) and Monitor (VGA) ports to which you can connect your computer to a flat-panel display. You must have a DVI-D or DVI-D/I display cable to use the DVI port or a display cable to use the Monitor port. If you wish to purchase a cable, contact your local retailer. For more information about Monitor port connections, see Using Computer Monitors and Projectors. To connect the computer to a flat-panel display using the DVI port 1. Connect the computer to the port replicator. See Connecting the Port Replicator for more information. Plug the power cord for the flat-panel display into an AC outlet. Plug the display cable into the DVI port on the port replicator. Turn on the computer and flat-panel display. Press the Fn+F7 keys to toggle the display between your computer, the flat-panel display, or both the computer and flat-panel display. See Selecting a display for more information. You cannot use the Monitor (VGA) port on your computer when a port replicator is connected to the computer. Use the DVI or Monitor (VGA) port on the port replicator instead. Connecting a Flat- Panel Display Page 118 Disconnecting a Port Replicator Disconnecting a port replicator when the computer is in a power saving mode (Standby or Hibernate) or the battery power is low may result in data loss or a computer malfunction. You can disconnect a port replicator when the computer is on or off. When the battery is low, turn off the computer before you disconnect a port replicator. To disconnect a port replicator 1. Close any active programs to prevent data loss, and disconnect the AC adapter. Push the release levers on each side of the port replicator to release the computer from the port replicator.
