[. . . ] FOREWORD This manual has been prepared to acquaint you with the operation and maintenance of your new RODIUS / STAVIC and to provide important safety information. We urge you to read it carefully and follow the recommendations to help assure the most enjoyable, safe, and trouble-free operation of your vehicle. [. . . ] It is essential to replace the entire assembly after it has been worn in a severe impact even if damage to the assembly is not obvious. Belts should not be worn with straps twisted. Each belt assembly must only be used by one occupant; it is dangerous to put a belt around a child being carried on the occupant's lap. No modifications or additions should be made by the user which will entire prevent the seat belt adjusting devices from operating to remove slack, or prevent the seat belt assembly from being adjusted to remove slack. SEAT BELT AND AIR BAG 8-13 AIR BAG The air bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) can provide additional protection for the driver and passenger against head and chest injuries in the event of a collision. Driver's Air Bag The driver's air bag is located at center of the steering wheel. Passenger's Air Bag* Pretensioner When a strong frontal impact occurs, seat belt pretensioners rewind the seat belts immediately to restrain the occupants to their seats. It helps the effective operation of the seat belts and airbags. Air Bag Warning Light If this lamp does not go out after engine starting or comes on while driving, it means that there is a malfunction in the system. Have the air bag system checked immediately by a Ssangyong Dealer or Ssangyong Authorized Service Operation. 8-14 SEAT BELT AND AIR BAG OPERATIONS OF AIR BAG AND PRETENSIONER Pretensioner The pretensioner is a device that retracts the seat belt to tighten or loosen the seat belt. When a collision occurs or when brakes are applied, the pretensioner detects the stopping pressure and tightens the belt before the occupant is propelled forward. This holds the occupant in the seat more securely. When a strong frontal impact occurs, seat belt pretensioners rewind the seat belts immediately to restrain the occupants to their seats. It helps the effective operation of the seat belts and airbags. The air bag does not inflate when: Rollover, side impact or rear impact Air Bag Operation The air bag inflates when: In response to a severe frontal impact, the driver's and front passenger's air bags work together with the seat belts to help preventing or reducing the personal injuries. The air bag seldom inflates when: Oblique impact, rollover Weak impact in which the sensor is unable to detect (under the inflation requirements) Impact against narrow objects such as a telegraph pole or a tree The vehicle falls into a drainage or a puddle The front of the vehicle crashes into high impact point vehicle such as a truck Impact on the hood by falling stones The air bag warning lamp is on The air bag can inflate when: Underbody impact from the road surface; impact against the curb at a very high speed; dropping impact onto the road surface with a large angle SEAT BELT AND AIR BAG 8-15 WARNINGS FOR AIR BAG WARNINGS FOR AIR BAG Do not diagnose the circuit with a circuit tester. Do not attempt to modify any air bag components including the steering wheel, air bag mounting area, and harness. Do not impact any air bag components including the steering wheel, air bag mounting area, and harness by hand or tools. You may get injured by sudden deployment. The air bag components will be very hot after deployment. Once the air bag system is triggered, the triggered air bag assembly should be removed from the vehicle and replaced with new one. The air bag contains explosive materials, so contact Ssangyong Dealer or Ssangyong Authorized Service Operation when trashing or replacing it. Incorrect air bag inspection can be dangerous and cause injuries. The air bag system must be disposed only by Ssangyong Dealer or Ssangyong Authorized Service Operation. Replace the steering wheel with only Ssangyong genuine part. When the engine starts, the air bag warning lamp comes on for a system check. It goes out after 6 seconds when the system is normal. If this warning lamp stays ON, then the system may be defective.
