[. . . ] The lowercase l (el) and the number 1 (one) are not interchangeable on computers as they are on a typewriter. The uppercase O (oh) and the 0 (zero) are not interchangeable. The Caps Lock function key locks only the alphabetic characters in uppercase while the shift lock on a typewriter places all keys in the shifted position. The Shift keys, the Tab key, and the BkSp (backspace) key perform the same function as their typewriter counterparts but also have special computer functions. THE KEYBOARD 5-1 User's Manual F1 . . . F12 function keys The function keys, not to be confused with Fn, are the 12 keys at the top of your keyboard. These keys are dark gray, but function differently from the other dark gray keys. F1 through F12 are called function keys because they execute programmed functions when pressed. Used in combination with the Fn key, keys marked with icons execute specific functions on the computer. See the section, Soft keys: Fn key combinations, in this chapter. The function executed by individual keys depends on the software you are using. Soft keys: Fn key combinations The Fn (function) is unique to Toshiba computers and is used in combination with other keys to form soft keys. Soft keys are key combinations that enable, disable or configure specific features. NOTE: Some software may disable or interfere with soft-key operations. A check box lets you select whether to hide or display the dialog box. When you turn on Standby, Hibernation will be automatically turned off, if it is enabled. 5-4 Soft keys: Fn key combinations Hibernation: Press Fn + F4 to turn Hibernation mode on and off. When you press these hotkeys, the current setting will be displayed in a dialog box that will let you OK or cancel the displayed setting. A check box lets you select whether to hide or display the dialog box. When you turn on Hibernation, Standby will be automatically turned off, if it is enabled. Display selection: Press Fn + F5 to change the active display device. When you press these hot keys a dialog box appears. Only selectable devices will be displayed. Hold down Fn and press F5 again to change the device. When you release Fn and F5, the selected device will change. If you hold down the keys for three seconds the selection will return to LCD. Display Brightness: Pressing Fn + F6 decreases the display brightness in increments. [. . . ] You cannot access or change information stored in ROM.
