Formatting discs To record to an unused DVD+R or DVD+RW you first have to format the blank DVD in the recorder's drive. After you have inserted a blank DVD and the recorder has started the read process, a query as to whether the disc is to be formatted is displayed. This process is frequently also called initialising.
