The Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION!YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED! cC A CAUTION indicates special precautions that must be taken to avoid damage to the outboard motor. NOTE: A NOTE provides key information to make procedures easier or clearer. [. . . ] 8 Keep the power unit higher than the propeller at all times. Otherwise, water can run into the cylinder, causing damage. w Be sure all people are clear of the outboard motor when adjusting the tilt angle, also be careful not to pinch any body parts between the drive unit and engine bracket. w Leaking fuel is a fire hazard. Disconnect the fuel line if the engine will be tilted for more than a few minutes. (If the fuel connector is provided on the motor. ) 3-21 E EMU00288 PROCEDURE FOR TILTING UP N 1) Place the gear shift lever in Neutral. 310012 2) 3) Remove the fuel line connection from the motor. Hold the rear of the top cowling with one hand and fully tilt the engine up. 304014* 4) Push the tilt support knob into the clamp bracket. PROCEDURE FOR TILTING DOWN 1) 2) 3) Slightly tilt up the engine. Tilt down the engine slowly to its home position. 3-22 E EMH60010 CRUISING IN OTHER CONDITIONS CRUISING IN SALT WATER After operating in salt water, wash out the cooling-water passages with fresh water to prevent them from becoming cloggedup with salt deposits. NOTE: Refer to cooling system flushing instructions in "TRANSPORTING AND STORING OUTBOARD MOTOR". If there is insufficient road clearance in this position, then trailer the motor in the tilt position using a motor support device such as a transom saver bar. q cC Do not use the tilt support lever/knob when trailering the boat. The outboard motor could shake loose from the tilt support and fall. If the motor can not be trailered in the down position, use an additional support device to secure it in the up position. w 8 Never get under the lower unit while it is tilted, even if a motor support bar is used. Grease the spark plug threads and reinstall the spark plugs and torque to proper specification. (Refer to the Periodic Maintenance section, "Cleanning and adjusting spark plug. "). 2) Turn the engine over with the stop lanyard disconnected to work the fogging oil into the piston rings. (Refer to the Periodic Maintenance section, "Changing gear oil. "). Inspect the oil for the presence of water which indicates a leaky seal. Seal replacement should be performed by an authorized Yamaha dealership prior to use. (Refer to the Periodic Maintenance section, "Greasing. ") EMK27010 Cleaning and Anti-corrosion Measure 1) Wash down the exterior of the outboard with fresh water and dry off completely. 2) Spray the engine's exterior with Yamaha Silicone Protectant (Part No. 3) Wax the cowling with a non-abrasive wax such as Yamaha Silicone Wax (Part No. ACC-11000-15-02). 4-5 E EMK32110 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE w Be sure to turn off the engine when you perform maintenance unless otherwise specified.
