IMPORTANT MANUAL INFORMATION Particularly important information is distinguished in this manual by the following notations: The Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION! [. . . ] If a spark plug shows signs of electrode erosion and excessive carbon or other deposits, it should be replaced. 1. Screw (× 3) EAU01315 6 Panel D To remove the panel Remove the screws, and then take the panel off. To install the panel Place the panel in the original position, and then install the screws. 1. Quick fastener (× 3) EAU04506 Panels E and F To remove one of the panels 1. (See page 3-11 for seat removal and installation procedures. ) 2. Remove the screws, the quick fastener screw and the quick fasteners, and then take the panel off. Place the panel in the original position, and then install the quick fasteners and quick fastener screw, and tighten the screws. Install the seats. 6-7 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR Specified spark plug: CR8E (NGK) or U24ESR-N (DENSO) NOTE: If a torque wrench is not available when installing a spark plug, a good estimate of the correct torque is 1/4­1/2 turn past finger tight. However, the spark plug should be tightened to the specified torque as soon as possible. _ _ a. Spark plug gap Before installing a spark plug, the spark plug gap should be measured with a wire thickness gauge and, if necessary, adjusted to specification. 6 Spark plug gap: 0. 7­0. 8 mm Clean the surface of the spark plug gasket and its mating surface, and then wipe off any grime from the spark plug threads. In addition, do not use oils labeled "ENERGY CONSERVING II" or higher. G Make sure that no foreign material enters the crankcase. Start the engine, and then let it idle for several minutes while checking it for oil leakage. If oil is leaking, immediately turn the engine off and check for the cause. CAUTION: If the oil level warning light flickers or remains on, immediately turn the engine off and have a Yamaha dealer check the vehicle. _ _ 10. Turn the engine off, and then check the oil level and correct it if necessary. _ 6 NOTE: After the engine is started, the engine oil level warning light should go off if the oil level is sufficient. _ _ 6-11 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU04067 Final gear oil The final gear case must be checked for oil leakage before each ride. If any leakage is found, have a Yamaha dealer check and repair the motorcycle. In addition, the final gear oil must be changed as follows at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. EW000066 NOTE: The oil level should be at the brim of the filler hole. _ _ 3. If the oil is below the brim of the filler hole, add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the correct level. 1. Correct oil level _ WARNING G Make sure that no foreign material enters the final gear case. G Make sure that no oil gets on the tire or wheel. To check the final gear oil level 1.
