The design and manufacture of this Yamaha motorcycle fully comply with the emissions standards for clean air applicable at the date of manufacture. Yamaha has met these standards without reducing the performance or economy of operation of the motorcycle. To maintain these high standards, it is important that you and your Yamaha dealer pay close attention to the recommended maintenance schedules and operating instructions contained within this manual. IMPORTANT MANUAL INFORMATION EAU10131 Particularly important information is distinguished in this manual by the following notations: The Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION! [. . . ] The spark plug cap may be difficult to remove because the rubber seal on the end of the cap fits tightly. To remove the spark plug cap, simply twist it back and forth while pulling it out; to install it, twist it back and forth while pushing it in. This model is equipped with a canister to prevent the discharging of fuel vapor into the atmosphere. Before operating this vehicle, make sure to check the following: G Check each hose connection. G Check each hose and canister for cracks or damage. G Make sure that the canister breather is not blocked, and if necessary, clean it. 6 6-11 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR NOTE: The engine oil should be between the minimum and maximum level marks. Place an oil pan under the engine to collect the used oil. Remove the engine oil filler cap and drain bolt to drain the oil from the crankcase. 1. 4. Engine oil filler cap Engine oil level check window Maximum level mark Minimum level mark 1. Engine oil drain bolt NOTE: An oil filter wrench is available at a Yamaha dealer. Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the new oil filter cartridge. 4. NOTE: After the engine is started, the engine oil level warning light should go off if the oil level is sufficient. ECA10400 CAUTION: If the oil level warning light flickers or remains on, immediately turn the engine off and have a Yamaha dealer check the vehicle. 6-14 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR G If water has been added to the coolant, have a Yamaha dealer check the antifreeze content of the coolant as soon as possible, otherwise the effectiveness of the coolant will be reduced. EWA10380 WARNING 1. Coolant reservoir cap Never attempt to remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. NOTE: G The radiator fans are automatically switched on or off according to the coolant temperature in the radiator. G If the engine overheats, see page 6-42 for further instructions. EAU33030 3. If the coolant is at or below the minimum level mark, remove panel C. Remove the reservoir cap, add coolant to the maximum level mark, and then install the reservoir cap. Coolant reservoir capacity (up to the maximum level mark): 0. 25 L (0. 26 US qt) (0. 22 Imp. qt) ECA10471 CAUTION: G 6 G If coolant is not available, use distilled water or soft tap water instead. Do not use hard water or salt water since it is harmful to the engine. If water has been used instead of coolant, replace it with coolant as soon as possible, otherwise the cooling system will not be protected against frost and corrosion. 6-15 Changing the coolant EWA10380 WARNING Never attempt to remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR The coolant must be changed at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Have a Yamaha dealer change the coolant. EAU40051 Replacing the air filter element The air filter element should be replaced at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Replace the air filter element more frequently if you are riding in unusually wet or dusty areas. Remove the cowling bolts, and then pull the cowling off. 1.
