[. . . ] In addition, the oil must be changed and the oil filter element cleaned at the intervals specified in the General maintenance and lubrication chart. Place the motorcycle on a level surface and hold it in an upright position. NOTE: Make sure that the motorcycle is positioned straight up when checking the oil level. A slight tilt to the side can result in a false reading. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. 1. Minimum level mark 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 3. Wait a few minutes until the oil settles, and then check the oil level through the check window located at the bottom right side of the crankcase. NOTE: The engine oil should be between the minimum and maximum level marks. If the engine oil is below the minimum level mark, add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the correct level. 6-8 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 3 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1. Engine oil drain bolt 4 2 1 1 1 To change the engine oil (with or without oil filter element cleaning) 1. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. Holding clip (×3) EAU03602 After changing the engine oil, make sure to check the oil pressure as described below. 8 Start the engine and keep it idling until oil flows out. If no oil comes out after one minute, turn the engine off immediately so it will not seize. If this occurs, have a Yamaha dealer repair the vehicle. 8 After checking the oil pressure, tighten the bleed bolt to the specified torque. 6-11 Cleaning the air filter element The air filter element should be cleaned at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Clean the air filter element more frequently if you are riding in unusually wet or dusty areas. (See page 6-6 for panel removal and installation procedures. ) 2. Remove the air filter case cover by removing the holding clips. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 1 2 1 2 3 3 4 7. Install the sponge material onto the frame, insert the air filter element into the air filter case, and then install the air filter case cover by installing the holding clips. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 cC 1. [. . . ] Remove the spark plug cap from the spark plug, and then install the spark plug and the spark plug cap. cC ECA00014 8 Storing the machine in a poorly ventilated room or covering it with a tarp, while it is still wet, will allow water and humidity to seep in and cause rust. 8 To prevent corrosion, avoid damp cellars, stables (because of the presence of ammonia) and areas where strong chemicals are stored. w EWA00003 To prevent damage or injury from sparking, make sure to ground the spark plug electrodes while turning the engine over. 7-4 MACHINE CARE AND STORAGE 6. Lubricate all control cables and the pivoting points of all levers and pedals as well as of the sidestand/centerstand. Check and, if necessary, correct the tire air pressure, and then lift the machine so that both of its wheels are off the ground. [. . . ]
