[. . . ] OWNER'S MANUAL XV250R XV250RC LIT-11626-16-21 2UJ-28199-1B EAU03438 EAU00002 INTRODUCTION Congratulations on your purchase of the Yamaha XV250/XV250C. This model is the result of Yamaha's vast experience in the production of fine sporting, touring, and pacesetting racing machines. It represents the high degree of craftsmanship and reliability that have made Yamaha a leader in these fields. This manual will give you an understanding of the operation, inspection, and basic maintenance of this motorcycle. [. . . ] · Replace the brake hoses every four years or if cracked or damaged. @ @ 6-5 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR NOTE: If any spark plug shows a distinctly different color, the engine could be defective. Do not attempt to diagnose such problems yourself. Instead, have a Yamaha dealer check the motorcycle. @ @ 1. Spark plug wrench Checking the spark plugs The spark plugs are important engine components, which are easy to check. Since heat and deposits will cause any spark plug to slowly erode, the spark plugs should be removed and checked in accordance with the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. In addition, the condition of the spark plugs can reveal the condition of the engine. Remove the spark plug as shown, with the spark plug wrench included in the owner's tool kit. Check that the porcelain insulator around the center electrode on each spark plug is a medium-tolight tan (the ideal color when the motorcycle is ridden normally). Check that all spark plugs installed in the engine have the same color. 3. Check each spark plug for electrode erosion and excessive carbon or other deposits, and replace it if necessary. Specified spark plug: C6HSA (NGK) or U20FS-U (DENSO) 6 6-6 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR Tightening torque: Spark plug: 12. 5 Nm (1. 25 m·kgf, 9. 0 ft·lbf) NOTE: If a torque wrench is not available when installing a spark plug, a good estimate of the correct torque is 1/41/2 turn past finger tight. However, the spark plug should be tightened to the specified torque as soon as possible. @ @ a. Spark plug gap To install a spark plug 1. Measure the spark plug gap with a wire thickness gauge and, if necessary, adjust the gap to specification. Spark plug gap: 0. 60. 7 mm (0. 020. 03 in) 2. Clean the surface of the spark plug gasket and its mating surface, and then wipe off any grime from the spark plug threads. Install the spark plug with the spark plug wrench, and then tighten it to the specified torque. 4. 6 6-7 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU00499 EAU04613 Canister (for California only) This model is equipped with a canister to prevent the discharging of fuel vapor into the atmosphere.
