Yamaha has met these standards without reducing the performance or economy of operation of the motorcycle. To maintain these high standards, it is important that you and your Yamaha dealer pay close attention to the recommended maintenance schedules and operating instructions contained within this manual. [. . . ] Bolt Checking the spark plugs The spark plugs are important engine components, which are easy to check. Since heat and deposits will cause any spark plug to slowly erode, the spark plugs should be removed and checked in accordance with the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. In addition, the condition of the spark plugs can reveal the condition of the engine. 6 To install the panel Place the panel in the original position, and then install the bolt. 1. Panel A EAU19151 Panel A To remove the panel Remove the bolt, and then pull the panel off as shown. 1. Remove the spark plug as shown, with the spark plug wrench included in the owner's tool kit. 6-8 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 3. Check each spark plug for electrode erosion and excessive carbon or other deposits, and replace it if necessary. Specified spark plug: NGK/DPR7EA-9 DENSO/X22EPR-U9 2. Clean the surface of the spark plug gasket and its mating surface, and then wipe off any grime from the spark plug threads. Install the spark plug with the spark plug wrench, and then tighten it to the specified torque. Tightening torque: Spark plug: 17. 5 Nm (1. 75 m·kgf, 12. 5 ft·lbf) 1. Spark plug wrench 6 To check the spark plugs 1. Check that the porcelain insulator around the center electrode on each spark plug is a medium-tolight tan (the ideal color when the vehicle is ridden normally). Remove the engine oil filler cap and drain bolt to drain the oil from the oil tank. NOTE: Skip steps 4­8 if the oil filter cartridge is not being replaced. Place an oil pan under the engine to collect the used oil. Remove the engine oil drain bolt to drain the oil from the crankcase. 1. If the engine oil is below the minimum level mark, add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the correct level. NOTE: When adding oil, be careful not to overfill the engine; the oil level rises faster starting from the half level portion on the dipstick. Insert the dipstick into the oil filler hole, and then tighten the oil filler cap. Remove the oil filter cartridge with an oil filter wrench. 1. Engine oil drain bolt (oil tank) 6-11 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR Tightening torque: Oil filter cartridge: 17 Nm (1. 7 m·kgf, 12 ft·lbf) Recommended engine oil: See page 8-1. Oil quantity: Without oil filter cartridge replacement: 3. 70 L (3. 91 US qt) (3. 26 Imp. qt) With oil filter cartridge replacement: 4. 10 L (4. 33 US qt) (3. 61 Imp. qt) ECA11620 9. Install the engine oil drain bolts, and then tighten them to the specified torque. Tightening torque: Engine oil drain bolt: 43 Nm (4. 3 m·kgf, 31 ft·lbf) 1.
