Yamaha has met these standards without reducing the performance or economy of operation of the motorcycle. To maintain these high standards, it is important that you and your Yamaha dealer pay close attention to the recommended maintenance schedules and operating instructions contained within this manual. IMPORTANT MANUAL INFORMATION EAU10130 Particularly important information is distinguished in this manual by the following notations: The Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION! [. . . ] Clean it if necessary. 9 Spark plug gap: 0. 8­0. 9 mm (0. 031­0. 035 in) 2. Clean the surface of the spark plug gasket and its mating surface, and 6-10 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU19871 Engine oil and oil filter cartridge The engine oil level should be checked before each ride. In addition, the oil must be changed and the oil filter cartridge replaced at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. NOTE: Make sure that the vehicle is positioned straight up when checking the oil level. A slight tilt to the side can result in a false reading. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. Wait a few minutes until the oil settles, and then check the oil level through the check window located at the bottom-right side of the crankcase. NOTE: The engine oil should be between the minimum and maximum level marks. 2. Place an oil pan under the engine to collect the used oil. Remove the engine oil filler cap and drain bolt to drain the oil from the crankcase. If the engine oil is below the minimum level mark, add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the correct level. To change the engine oil (with or without oil filter cartridge replacement) 1. Remove the oil filler bolt, and then check the oil level in the final gear case. NOTE: The oil level should be at the brim of the filler hole. 2. Remove the oil filler bolt and drain bolt to drain the oil from the final gear case. Install the final gear oil drain bolt, and then tighten it to the specified torque. Tightening torque: Final gear oil drain bolt: 23 Nm (2. 3 m·kgf, 17 ft·lbf) G G WARNING Make sure that no foreign material enters the final gear case. Make sure that no oil gets on the tire or wheel. 1. Add the recommended final gear oil to the brim of the filler hole. Recommended final gear oil: Hypoid gear oil SAE 80 (API GL4) or multi-grade hypoid gear oil SAE 80W-90 Oil quantity: 0. 20 L (0. 21 US qt) (0. 18 Imp. qt) 3. If the oil is below the brim of the filler hole, add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the correct level. Place an oil pan under the final gear case to collect the used oil. 6-14 NOTE: GL4 is a quality rating. Hypoid gear oils rated GL5 or GL6 may also be used. Check the final gear case for oil leakage. If oil is leaking, check for the cause. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU20070 Coolant The coolant level should be checked before each ride.
