The design and manufacture of this Yamaha motorcycle fully comply with the emissions standards for clean air applicable at the date of manufacture. Yamaha has met these standards without reducing the performance or economy of operation of the motorcycle. To maintain these high standards, it is important that you and your Yamaha dealer pay close attention to the recommended maintenance schedules and operating instructions contained within this manual. EAU00003 IMPORTANT MANUAL INFORMATION Particularly important information is distinguished in this manual by the following notations: Q w The Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION! [. . . ] Install the spark plug with the spark plug wrench, and then tighten it to the specified torque. NOTE: If a torque wrench is not available when installing a spark plug, a good estimate of the correct torque is 1/4­1/2 turn past finger tight. However, the spark plug should be tightened to the specified torque as soon as possible. 6 6-9 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU04617 1 2 Engine oil and oil filter element The engine oil level should be checked before each ride. In addition, the oil must be changed and the oil filter element cleaned at the intervals specified in the General maintenance and lubrication chart. Place the motorcycle on a level surface and hold it in an upright position. NOTE: Make sure that the motorcycle is positioned straight up when checking the oil level. A slight tilt to the side can result in a false reading. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. 3 4 1. Fuel tank Carburetor Canister Vent hose 1 1. Overflow hose EAU01796 Canister (for California only) 6 This model is equipped with a canister to prevent the discharging of fuel vapor into the atmosphere. 8 Check each hose and canister for cracks or damage. Add the specified amount of the recommended engine oil, and then install and tighten the oil filler cap. Oil quantity: Without oil filter element removal: 1. 0 L (0. 88 Imp qt, 1. 06 US qt) With oil filter element removal: 1. 1 L (0. 97 Imp qt, 1. 16 US qt) Total amount (dry engine): 1. 3 L (1. 14 Imp qt, 1. 37 US qt) cC ECA00133 8 In order to prevent clutch slippage (since the engine oil also lubricates the clutch), do not mix any chemical additives. Do not use oils with a diesel specification of "CD" or oils of a higher quality than specified. In addition, do not use oils labeled "ENERGY CONSERVING II" or higher. 8 Make sure that no foreign material enters the crankcase. Start the engine, and then let it idle for several minutes while checking it for oil leakage. If oil is leaking, immediately turn the engine off and check for the cause. Turn the engine off, and then check the oil level and correct it if necessary. Install the engine guard by installing the bolt. 6 cC EC000071 Before installing the engine oil drain bolt, do not forget to install the O-ring, compression spring, and oil strainer in position. Tightening torque: Engine oil drain bolt: 43 Nm (4. 3 m0kgf, 31 ft0lbf) 6-13 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 1 1 2 1. Air filter element frame 2 Cleaning the air filter element 6 The air filter element should be cleaned at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart.
