This model is the result of Yamaha's vast experience in the production of fine sporting, touring, and pacesetting racing machines. It represents the high degree of craftsmanship and reliability that have made Yamaha a leader in these fields. This manual will give you an understanding of the operation, inspection, and basic maintenance of this motorcycle. [. . . ] Air filter case cover 6-16 CAUTION: G Make sure that the air filter element is properly seated in the air filter case. G The engine should never be operated without the air filter element installed, otherwise the piston(s) and/or cylinder(s) may become excessively worn. Install the air filter case cover by installing the screws. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 6. Check the hose on the side of the air filter case for accumulated dirt or water. EAU41220 Cleaning the spark arrester The spark arrester should be cleaned at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. EWA10980 1 G G WARNING Always let the exhaust system cool prior to touching exhaust components. Do not start the engine when cleaning the exhaust system. 1 2 3 1. Air filter check hose NOTE: Make sure to select a well-ventilated area free of combustible materials to clean the spark arrester. Remove the tailpipe by removing the screw, and then pulling it out of the muffler. 2. Tap the tailpipe lightly, and then use a wire brush to remove any carbon deposits from the spark arrester portion of the tailpipe and inside of the tailpipe housing. 4 5 6 7 8 2. If dirt or water is visible, remove the hose, clean it, and then install it. 1 2 1. Spark arrester 6-17 9 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 3. Insert the tailpipe into the muffler, and then install and tighten the screw. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Engine idling speed: 1300­1500 r/min EAU21251 EAU21311 Carburetor The carburetor is an important part of the engine and its emission control system, which requires very sophisticated adjustment. Therefore, carburetor adjustments should be left to Yamaha dealer, who has the necessary professional knowledge and experience. Checking the engine idling speed The engine idling speed must be checked as follows and, if necessary, adjusted by a Yamaha dealer at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Start the engine and warm it up for several minutes at 1000­2000 r/min while occasionally revving it to 4000­5000 r/ min. NOTE: The engine is warm when it quickly responds to the throttle. NOTE: Make sure to align the screw hole when inserting the tailpipe. 7 8 9 6-18 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU21382 EAU21401 EAU21600 Checking the throttle cable free play Valve clearance The valve clearance changes with use, resulting in improper air-fuel mixture and/or engine noise. To prevent this from occurring, the valve clearance must be adjusted by a Yamaha dealer at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Tires To maximize the performance, durability, and safe operation of your motorcycle, note the following points regarding the specified tires. Tire air pressure The tire air pressure should be checked and, if necessary, adjusted before each ride. EWA10500 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 1. Throttle cable free play G The throttle cable free play should measure 3. 0­5. 0 mm (0. 12­0. 20 in) at the throttle grip. Periodically check the throttle cable free play and, if necessary, have a Yamaha dealer adjust it. G WARNING The tire air pressure must be checked and adjusted on cold tires (i. e. , when the temperature of the tires equals the ambient temperature). The tire air pressure must be adjusted in accordance with the riding speed and with the total weight of rider, passenger, cargo, and accessories approved for this model. 6-19 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR Tire air pressure (measured on cold tires): 0­90 kg (0­198 lb): Front: 125 kPa (18 psi) (1. 25 kgf/cm2) Rear: 150 kPa (22 psi) (1. 50 kgf/cm2) 90­160 kg (198­353 lb): Front: 150 kPa (22 psi) (1. 50 kgf/cm2) Rear: 175 kPa (25 psi) (1. 75 kgf/cm2) Maximum load*: 160 kg (353 lb) * Total weight of rider, passenger, cargo and accessories EWA11020 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 G G G G WARNING Because loading has an enormous impact on the handling, braking, performance and safety characteristics of your motorcycle, you should keep the following precautions in mind. Operation of an overloaded motorcycle may result in tire damage, loss of control, or severe injury.
