The design and manufacture of this Yamaha motorcycle fully comply with the emissions standards for clean air applicable at the date of manufacture. Yamaha has met these standards without reducing the performance or economy of operation of the motorcycle. To maintain these high standards, it is important that you and your Yamaha dealer pay close attention to the recommended maintenance schedules and operating instructions contained within this manual. IMPORTANT MANUAL INFORMATION Particularly important information is distinguished in this manual by the following notations: The Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION! [. . . ] Install the spark plug cap. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU01796 Canister (for California only) This model is equipped with a canister to prevent the discharging of fuel vapor into the atmosphere. G Check each hose and canister for cracks or damage. G Make sure the vent hose is not blocked. 4. Fuel tank Canister Vent hose Carburetor 6 6-12 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU03612 Engine oil and oil filter cartridge The engine oil level should be checked before each ride. In addition, the oil must be changed and the oil filter cartridge replaced at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Place the motorcycle on a level surface and hold it in an upright position. 6 NOTE: Make sure that the motorcycle is positioned straight up when checking the oil level. A slight tilt to the side can result in a false reading. _ _ 1. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. Wait a few minutes until the oil settles, and then check the oil level through the check window located at the bottom-right side of the crankcase. NOTE: The engine oil should be between the minimum and maximum level marks. _ _ To change the engine oil (with or without oil filter cartridge replacement) 1. Install the cowling. _ 6-15 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU03987 Coolant The coolant level should be checked before each ride. In addition, the coolant must be changed at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Place the motorcycle on a level surface and hold it in an upright position. NOTE: G The coolant level must be checked on a cold engine since the level varies with engine temperature. G Make sure that the motorcycle is positioned straight up when checking the coolant level. A slight tilt to the side can result in a false reading. _ _ Coolant reservoir capacity: 0. 55 L (0. 48 Imp qt, 0. 58 US qt) EC000080 _ 1. Check the coolant level in the coolant reservoir. NOTE: The coolant should be between the minimum and maximum level marks. _ _ 3. If the coolant is at or below the minimum level mark, remove the seat (See page 3-9 for seat removal and installation procedures. ), and then open the coolant reservoir cap. Add coolant or distilled water to raise the coolant to the specified level, close the coolant reservoir cap, and then install the seat. 6-16 CAUTION: G If coolant is not available, use distilled water or soft tap water instead. Do not use hard water or salt water since it is harmful to the engine.
