[. . . ] Application Profile Market: Turbine Blades (Multi-segment Vanes) Application Description: Removing casting scale, milling lines and minor defects using small diameter contact wheels 241568 Key Application Requirements Remove casting scale, milling lines and minor surface defects from nickel alloy or titanium cast multi-segment vanes, while leaving a consistent, high quality finish. PRODUCT 3MTM TrizactTM CF Belt, grades A300 A65 Scotch-BriteTM Surface Conditioning Belt, A MED or A VFN Products Replaced Competitive J weight conventional coated abrasive belts in grades P80 P240. Advantages/Benefits To Customer Consistent, improved finishes 3M Trizact CF Belt features a macroreplicated matrix of resin and aluminum oxide mineral on a flexible X weight cloth backing. The structure is designed to break down under moderate to high grinding pressure, exposing fresh mineral to the grinding/polishing interface. [. . . ] Historically conventional coated abrasive belts are used to remove casting scale, milling lines and minor surface defects and to provide the required surface finish on the airfoils. The abrasive sequence depends on the casting quality and the required finish specifications (typically in the range of 2025 micro inches), but a common starting point is a J weight belt in grade P80, often followed by P180 and then P240. As a last step Scotch-BriteTM Surface Conditioning Belt in grade A MED is used to blend the airfoils to create a uniform finish. Using 3MTM TrizactTM CF Belt for defect removal and scratch refinement as necessary will provide longer life and a high quality, more consistent finish than conventional coated abrasives. Recommended Trizact CF Process Application Casting scale, milling line and minor defect removal Coarse scratch refinement Scratch refinement Scratch refinement Overall blending of airfoil Recommended Trizact CF Sequence A300 A160 or A100 A65 Scotch-BriteTM Surface Conditioning Belt A MED or A VFN Competitive Coated Abrasive J weight P80 J weight P180 J weight P240 A MED grade non-woven belt Recommended Belt Speeds High nickel alloys: 6, 000 7, 000 SFPM Titanium: 2, 500 3, 500 SFPM Tools One issue with processing these vanes is the limited space between the airfoils. This process requires a tool with a narrow arm, a small diameter contact wheel and an abrasive t. Common tools for this application include portable file belt tools or backstands with a ¼" diameter steel contact wheel.
