Wow, you must be thinking, What a gigantic box!The box may be intimidating to look at, but it's more than made up for by the ease of assembly. You'll be riding your new bike in 2 minutes. [. . . ] There are two adjustments that you can make using these knobs. The first adjusts the "tightness" of your brake levers (how hard you have to pull for the brake to be applied) and the second adjusts the actual functionality of the brake. 21 Changing the "Feel" of the brakes: You may notice after a long curvy downhill that you have to pull harder on the brake levers to actually slow the bike. To "tighten" your brakes, twist the red knob on the outside of the wheel clockwise until you find the desired level. Changing the "Strength" of the brakes: Every few hundred miles, you'll need to adjust for wear in your brake pads. This time you'll need to twist the knob on the inside of the wheel until the pad is actually in contact with the brake rotor. Test for this by lifting the wheel off the ground and spinning. If you hear a vibrating sound, the pad is touching the rotor. Now twist the knob counterclockwise one or two clicks to the pad is no longer touching the rotor. In other words, you want the pad to be as close to the rotor without actually touching it. When you think you've got the brakes adjusted correctly, double check to verify the pads are not in contact with the rotors. Once again, lift the wheel and give the tire a spin. If you hear a vibrating noise, the pad is touching the rotor and you need to twist the knob counterclockwise. While easy to make, this adjustment requires a bit of fine tuning. Shifting Adjustments: Chainring Adjustments: When you shift gears, you apply tension to a cable that stretches from the handlebar to the derailleur in the rear of the bike. When you shift into an easier gear, you pull on this cable. When you shift into a more difficult gear, you release tension. Over time your cables will stretch, causing your shifting to falter somewhat. Without the proper adjustments your ability to shift gears effectively will deteriorate. The first symptom of faulty shifting is a sluggish shift. If you try to shift down (towards an easier gear) and the bike demonstrates a delayed response, you need to make a minor adjustment. 22 If you fail to adjust for sluggish shifting, or you just didn't notice, the chain may begin to make noise or get stuck between gears. Either way you'll need to make a simple adjustment. Find the barrel adjuster that attaches to the back of your thumb lever. Twist the adjuster one or two clicks at a time and then test to see if the bike shifts properly into a lower gear. [. . . ] Try to avoid heavily trafficked roads and those with speed limits above 35 MPH. Descending a winding mountain road is exhilarating fun-- unless you fall. Take extreme care when traveling at speed. It takes only a minute, literally, to do a good inspection of your bike's mechanical systems. [. . . ]
