Hardware and Software Requirements
Important!Before you start, make sure you have the following computer setup. (These are the minimum requirements. ) IBM® PC or compatible computer with a 486DX2 66 MHz or higher processor (Pentium® processor recommended) Microsoft® Windows® 98 or Windows 95 (not compatible with Windows 3. 1 or Windows NT) 16 megabytes (MB) of RAM (32 MB recommended) 50 MB of available hard disk space Bi-directional, Centronics®-compatible parallel cable (IEEE 1284-compliant); a cable less than 6. 6 feet in length is recommended. Make sure the blue lock lever on the BJ cartridge holder is in the up position.

Open the BJ cartridge package.
Peel the foil from the BJ cartridge's protective packaging and remove the cartridge.

Prepare the BJ cartridge.
Make sure the BJ cartridge's print head is facing away from you, and then carefully pull the orange cap from the print head.

Discard the cap and tape immediately. Never attempt to re-attach the cap or tape to the print head; this may adversely affect the ink flow or quality of the ink color. Hold the BJ cartridge on the sides only. Do not touch the silver plate on the bottom of the cartridge, or the silver metal or circuit area on the side.

Insert the BJ cartridge.
Carefully set the BJ cartridge straight down into the cartridge holder. Make sure the cartridge label faces you.

Lower the lock lever.
Make sure the cartridge is aligned against the back of the holder, then press the blue lock lever down completely. The BJ cartridge locks into position.

Set the paper thickness lever for the type of BJ cartridge you installed.
Color cartridge and color printing -- center position Black cartridge or black-only printing -- left position Right position for printing envelopes

Close the printer cover.

Press the CARTRIDGE button on the operator panel.
The cartridge holder then moves to the home position on the right side of the unit. The LCD displays:
The MultiPASS C5500 cleans the print head and then displays the date and mode.
The printer is now in Standby mode. Unplug the MultiPASS C5500 ONLY when it is in Standby mode (the date and Receive mode show in the display). Make sure the cartridge holder is in the home position on the right. Some operations may take awhile; if you hear your computer working, wait for it to finish. Normally you click Next to move from one screen to the next.

Following the Setup Program
The Setup program loads your Canon MultiPASS C5500 software in this order: First you select the software you want to install. Make sure the MultiPASS C5500 is highlighted and click Next. You must confirm the license agreement to continue. The MultiPASS Master Installer installs the MultiPASS Desktop Manager. The Master Installer installs the MultiPASS Desktop Manager 3. 0 in the directory C:\Program Files\Canon\MultiPASS or the directory you specify during installation. Next the Master Installer programs your fax information. You see a series of screens on which you specify your Receive mode by responding to various questions. (See page 15 for details on the different Receive modes. ) You also enter your fax header information. On the Fax Information Setup screen, you respond to each entry and press the tab key to move from one entry to the next. [. . . ] If the above procedures do not resolve the problem, please call the Canon Computer Systems, Inc. Customer Care Center; see the back cover for details. If the error message clears, be sure to start up your system and check the MultiPASS. The problem may be cleared.
