Seats and Restraint Systems This section tells you how to use your seats and safety belts properly. also Features and Controls This section explains how to start and operate your vehicle. Comfort Controls and Audio Systems This section tells you how to adjust the ventilation and comfort controls and how to operate your audio system. Your Driving and the Road Here you'll find helpful information and tips about the road and to drive under different conditions. [. . . ] But even 3/4 of a second, a vehicle in moving at 60 mph (100 km/h) travels 66 feet (20 m). That could be a lot distance in an emergency, so of keeping enough space between your vehicle and others is important. And, of course, actual stopping distances vary greatly with the surface the road (whether it's pavement or of gravel); the condition the road (wet, dry, icy); tire of tread; the condition your brakes;the weight of the of vehicle and the amount brake force applied. of
Sometimes, as when you're drivingon snow or ice, it's easy to ask more of those control systems than the tires and road can provide, That means you lose control can of your vehicle.
4-6
Avoid needless heavy braking. Some people drive in spurts -- heavy acceleration followed by heavy braking -- rather thankeeping pace with traffic. This is a mistake. Your brakes may not have time to cool between hard stops. Your brakes will wear out muchfaster if you do a lotof heavy braking. If you keep pace with the traffic and allow realistic following distances, you will eliminate a lot unnecessary braking. That means of better braking and longer brake life. If your engine ever stops whileyou're driving, brake normally but don't pumpyour brakes. If you do, the pedal may getharder to pushdown. If your engine stops, you willstill have some powerbrake assist. But you willuse it when you brake. Once the power assist is used up, it may take longer to stop and brake pedal the will be harder to push.

- . Lock P `;es (ABS)
rour vehicle has anti-lock brakes (ABS). ABS is an advanced electronic braking system that will help prevent a braking skid.
When you start your engine, or when you begin drive to away, your anti-lockbrake system will check itself. You may hear a momentarymotor or clicking noisewhile this test is going and you may even notice that your on, brake pedal moves a little. (You may also hear a clicking noise if you leave the ignition in the RUN position for about four seconds before starting the vehicle. ) This is normal. If there's a problem with the anti-lock brake system, this warning light will stay or on flash. See "Anti-Lock Brake System Warning Light" in the Index.
4-7
The anti-lock system can change the brake pressure faster than any driver could. The computer is programmed to make the most of available and road conditions. tire
Here's how anti-lock works. Suddenly an animal jumps out in front of you.
A computer senses that wheels slowing down. If one are of the wheelsis about to stop rolling, the computer will separately work the brakes at each front wheel and at both rear wheels. As you brake, your computer keeps receiving updates on wheel speed and controls braking pressure accordingly.
4-8
Remember: Anti-lock doesn'tchange the time you need to get your foot to the brake pedal or always decrease up stopping distance. If you get too close to the vehicle in front of you, you won't have time to apply your brakes if that vehicle suddenly slows stops. Always leave or enough room up aheadto stop, even though youhave anti-lock brakes.
Traction Control System(If Equipped)
Your vehicle may have a traction control system that limits wheel spin. This is especially useful in slippery road conditions. The system operates onlyif it senses or that one or both of the front wheels are spinning beginning to lose traction. When this happens, the system worksthe front brakes and reduces engine power to limit wheel spin.
