The level of sails directly influences the speed of the ship. Without an order to the contrary on your part, the ships automatically use maximum sails during their travels. During cannon combats, a ship can sustain damage to the sails. The condition of the selected ship's sails is indicated in the "ship-info" window. The only means of repairing the sails is to go to a friendly port. The player can raise/lower the sails with the keyboard arrows or by clicking on the "sails" button of the interface bar.
