SIGNIFICANCE AND USE Sulfate is largely present in natural waters in a wide range of concentrations. It is not toxic but has to be kept below a certain threshold to prevent it from creating an unpleasant taste in water. The concentrations are particularly higher close to mine run-off water. Sulfate is extensively used as a nutrient in agriculture. The procedure for determining sulfate is a modification of the Determination of Sulfate by Sulfonazo III.
