Detailed instructions for use are in the User's Guide.
[. . . ] Put the transducer end (the wide end) in the water making sure to point it directly to the bottom for an accurate depth reading and flick the switch letting go of the switch immediately.
Fig. The current depth of the water will be shown (fig. You don't need to turn the DF51 off - once you have a reading it will flash for 10 seconds and the unit will turn itself off.
3. [. . . ] If the unit is not working properly remove it and try to position it again. To remove the DF51 tap it gently with the base of your hand - never strike it with an object since this could easily damage the sensitive electronics inside

Using the DF51 through a boat hull
The DF51's advanced electronics allow it to take readings through the hull of a boat or canoe. To be effective, the hull must be made of solid fiber glass or aluminum a maximum 1/8" thick. Again, as with ice, if there are any air pockets the DF51 will not work properly. Also, the unit will not work through wood, plastic or composites. To take a reading through the hull Place the transducer in 0. 5" of water or coat the end of the transducer in petroleum jelly and press against the hull or place in a plastic bag full of water and place the bag on the bottom of the boat (fig. 6
Scanning for depth changes or fish
As well as using to scan vertically the DF51 can be used to scan sideways as a depth finder and fish finder to search for drop-off's and hiding fish, to do so 1. Place the unit perpendicular to the water to get a correct reading 3. Once you have a correct reading, scan by moving the unit around horizontally (just like using a flashlight). Remember, the sonar will only work if it hits solid objects within the range of the unit (120 ft)

Using the DF51 for diving
The DF51 is waterproof and pressure rated to 3 bar or 30m/100ft making it an ideal range finder for snorkeling or diving. Once again, the unit must be directed at solid objects within 120 ft to give a reading. Also, always attach a wrist strap when using for diving or snorkeling otherwise you may loose the unit !
Looking after your DF51
1. Clean with fresh water after using in salt water and dry 2. When storing, remove the batteries to prevent leakage 3. When storing - keep in a cool dry place - never leave in temperatures over 120ºF 50ºC otherwise the components could be damaged - to maintain the activation switch coat is regularly with a non-water based lubricant such as WD-40 or Vaseline to protect from moisture - keep the battery cap or ring lubricated to maintain seal integrity (fig. 7

Trouble Shooting
You must never try to repair the unit yourself - the components are very sensitive and non-serviceable 1. When I flick the switch nothing happens Make sure the batteries are installed correctly and are fresh - test them on another product to make sure they work 2. The depth reading is '---' cannot take a correct reading. [. . . ] On average, batteries will last for 100 readings 2. Does the DF51 float Not only is it waterproof but the DF51 floats. If you drop it in the water it will not sink and if you let go of it when you are diving it will float to the surface make sure it is attached to you via a lanyard when diving to avoid loosing it 3.
