Your reseller knows the characteristics of your HP Brio PC and will be able to provide appropriate advice to solve your problem. 17 Fixing & Avoiding Problems Tips on Using your CD-RW Drive Tips on Using your CD-RW Drive The following information applies only if you purchased a HP Brio PC equipped with a CD-RW drive. Your HP 8100 CD-Writer Plus is capable of writing data to both CD-R (Recordable or write-once) disks and CD-RW (ReWriteable) disks. CD-RW disks are generally used as if they were large-capacity floppy disks. CD-R disks are used to permanently archive files. Two software applications (from Adaptec) are pre-loaded on your HP Brio PC to create CD-R or CD-RW disks -- DirectCD for data backup and archiving, and EasyCD Creator for CD duplication and distribution. DirectCD uses a new data storage technology (UDF -- Universal Data Format) to write data to a CD-RW or a CD-R disk. Reading Your CD-RW and CD-R Disks on Other Computers Note CD-RW and CD-R disks created with Adaptec's EasyCD Creator can be read on Multi-Read CD-ROM drives without the need for additional software. If you want to be able to read your CD-RW disks (created with DirectCD) on another computer that has a CD-ROM drive, check the following: · Ensure the CD-ROM drive is Multi-Read. 24x and higher speed CD-ROM drives are generally Multi-Read. · Ensure that UDF reader software is installed on the target PC. This software lets you read your data on the CD-RW disk using a Multi-Read CD-ROM. You can download the software from http://www. adaptec. com/support/files/udfreaders. html. If you want to be able to read your CD-R disk on another computer with a CD-ROM drive, you'll need to end the writing session by choosing the option "close session" prior to ejecting your CD-R disk. 18 Fixing & Avoiding Problems Tips on Using Your DVD Drive Tips on Using Your DVD Drive Playing DVD movie disks (only available on Windows 98). The Hollywood movie industry and DVD-ROM disk manufacturers divided the world into regions and allocated a code per region. This code is written on the DVD movie disks as well as on the DVD-ROM drives (in order to restrict their use to the corresponding region). Your DVD-ROM drive comes without any region code. The first time you play a DVD movie disk, the DVD-ROM drive adopts the region code of your DVD disk. From this point onwards, you will only be able to play DVD movies with the same region code. The region code (on the case of the DVD movie disk) will be one of the following: Code 1 2 3 4 5 6 Countries USA, Canada Europe (Excluding ex-USSR countries), Japan, Near East (including Iran and Egypt), South Africa South-East Asia, South Korea Latin America + Oceania (Australia, New Zealand) Africa (Excluding Egypt and S. A. ), Eastern European countries, Sub-Indian Continent China Your DVD-ROM drive can also read DVD data disks. These disks do not have region codes. Protect Your HP Brio PC from Power Shortages If you plan to use your PC in a permanent way -- to receive faxes, for example -- you should really consider adding an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit to your HP Brio PC, so that it is protected against power shortages. Indeed after a power shortage, your HP Brio PC may not be able to retrieve its original configuration (network connections, fax reception, etc).
