To install a RAM expansion module
To increase your notebook' RAM, you can install a RAM module in the expansion slot s on the bottom of the notebook.
CAUTION
Your notebook' chips are extremely sensitive to static electricity, and can be s permanently damaged by it. Handle the RAM module only by its edges. Before installing the memory module, discharge your body' static electricity by touching s the metal shielding around the connectors on the rear of the notebook. Turn off the notebook: click Start, Turn Off Computer, Turn Off. Important: unplug the AC adapter, if present, and remove the battery. From the bottom of the notebook, loosen the screw holding the RAM cover (the cover retains the screw), and remove the cover. Carefully insert the edge of the RAM module into the connector at about a 30° angle until it is fully seated. Then press down on both sides until the latches snap closed.

To replace the hard disk drive
You' need a small Phillips screwdriver for this procedure. Unplug the AC adapter, if present, and remove the battery. Remove both hard drive retaining screws from the bottom of the notebook.
3. Carefully pull the hard drive out of the notebook. Gently slide the new drive into the hard drive compartment. Press firmly to make sure the connector seats properly. Reinstall the hard drive retaining screws.
Important
If you are installing a new hard disk drive, you should create a Utility partition on the drive before loading any software. See "To recover the factory installation of your hard disk" on page 53. If the notebook prompts you to activate Windows XP, follow the instructions that appear onscreen. The Windows XP Product ID code is located on the bottom of the notebook. To install the holder on a new hard disk drive or prepare a new hard disk for use, see "Replacing the Hard Disk Drive" in the online Reference Guide.
