[. . . ] These releases have changed the behavior of the runtime environment, leading to some incompatibilities in Secure Path Manager. The Secure Path Manager is loaded from and communicates with a special web server, known as ELM. This web server is used by many HP management products and may be automatically updated to the latest version when these are installed. The most common application that updates the ELM is Smart StartTM. There is another applet that is sometimes necessary, depending on the version of ELM under which Secure Path Manager is running. The version of ELM (2. 5. x) that shipped with Secure Path Manager uses this applet. Later versions of ELM, such as those installed by Smart Start, use a JavaScript routine for login. The login applet requires a "default" Java VM, such as that which was supplied by Microsoft in Internet Explorer versions prior to 6. 0. Microsoft no longer supplies a Java VM with Internet Explorer. There are some problems caused by actual incompatibilities with released Java versions and some that are due to changes made by Microsoft. 4 Secure Path Manager and the Java Runtime Environment Application Notes HP Solutions HP Solutions Note that these cases assume that you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP as the console.
