Installation, Operating and Troubleshooting information for Ultrium half-height SAS tape drives

This document contains proprietary information, which is protected by copyright. [. . . ] HP strongly recommends that the tape drive is connected to the second SAS port on the host controller (this is the port that connects to the hard disk drive bays with the highest numbers and is labeled "2i" on most servers). Look at the front of the server and establish which SAS cable is connected to the hard disk drive bays with the highest numbers. If www. hp. com/go/connect advises that you will lose the use of a hard disk drive bay, also identify the location of that disk drive. NOTE: If the hard disk drive bay is in use, do not use the supplied cable (even if other disk bays are empty), because you will lose use of the disk in the disk drive bay and may damage your server configuration. Also, do not move an existing disk to accommodate this configuration because you will need to rebuild your RAID configuration. Instead, purchase and install an additional HBA, see www. hp. com/go/connect for supported products. Figure 23 Removing existing SAS cable

4. Remove a blank PCI slot cover on the rear panel of the server. This must be wide enough to accommodate the external tape drive connector on the SAS cable. Feed the external tape drive connector and cable through the empty slot from the inside of the server. Figure 24 Feeding the SAS cable through the empty slot from the inside of the server

7. Make sure the blanking plate is secure on the rear panel and replace the cover on the server.

IMPORTANT: On some servers, even those with latch-mounted arrangements, it is necessary to use the supplied screw to secure the blanking plate. Connect the other end of the SAS cable (threaded through the blanking plate to the outside of the server) to the connector on the rear of the tape drive. Plug the power cable securely into the socket on the rear panel of the drive and plug the other end of the power cable into the power outlet. The power on/off switch is on the front panel, see Figure 27. Figure 27 Connecting the cables to the tape drive

10. If you have lost the use of a disk bay (see step 2), we strongly recommend that you attach the supplied sticker to the blanking plate of the disk bay to show that it is disconnected. NOTE: If you subsequently install a hard disk in this bay, it will not work. This does not mean there is a fault with either the disk or the server. 11. Now go to "Reboot the server" on page 44.
Reboot the server
Switch on the tape drive (the power on/off switch is on the front panel) and power up the server. [. . . ] Use a new or known, good piece of media and see if it loads. If it does, the original cartridge is faulty and should be discarded. Check if another Ultrium drive of the same model will accept the cartridge. If it does, the original drive may be faulty.
