4. 2. 1. Creating A RAID 0 Array Using Apple's Disc Utility Caution!Before you create a RAID array, make sure that you backup all of your important files contained on the drives that you are going to be using in your RAID set. All data is lost as the drives are initialized to create the array.

1) Connect two or more LaCie Hard Drive's to your computer's FireWire ports. For the best performance, connect the drives to separate FireWire ports, i. e. connect one drive to the native FireWire bus, and the other drive to an OHCI-compliant FireWire PCI card, such as the LaCie FireWire 800 PCI Card. 2) From the Applications folder, open the Utilities folder and open Disc Utilities. 3) In the Disc Utilities window, click on the RAID tab.

4) From the RAID Scheme: pull-down menu, choose Stripe.

5) In the RAID Set Name: box, type in a name for your RAID array.

6) From the Volume Format: pull-down menu, choose your file format: Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Standard, MS-DOS File System or UNIX File System. To achieve the best performance, format the RAID set as a Mac OS Extended volume. For more information, see section 5. 1. 1. Using Your LaCie Drive

Under Panther, you can select Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which enables journaling (for more information, see section 5. 1. 1. File System Formats - Mac Users), and you can not create a MS-DOS File System.

Mac OS 10. x Users: The LaCie Big Disk is pre-formatted as a Mac OS Extendedvolume. You may customize the drive by reformatting and/or partitioning the drive with separate file system formats. For optimal peformance in Mac OS environments, format and partition the drive as one large Mac OS Extended volume. Mac OS Extended (HFS+) Mac OS Extended refers to the file system used by Mac OS 8. 1 and later. [. . . ] This process of dividing up the hard drive is called partitioning. A partition is just one section of the hard drive that will contain either special data put there by Silverlining or other files and data. Peripheral A generic term applied to printers, scanners, mice, keyboards, serial ports, graphics cords, disk drives and other computer subsystems.
