ISO9660, astandardpublishedbytheInternationalOrganizationforStandardization, definesafilesystemforCDand DVD-ROMmedia. ItsupportsdifferentcomputeroperatingsystemssuchasMicrosoftWindows, MacOS, andsystemsthat followtheUnixspecification, toensuredataexchange. MacuserscanchoosetocreateMac-only, ISO9660orHybridCD/DVD-ROMs(Mac&PC).

DiffersfromtheCD-RDAOmethodbecausethelead-in, dataareaandlead-outareas areallwrittensequentially. Incremental Recording (IR)ADVDwritingprocessthatissimilartotheSessionatOnce(SAO)CD-Rwritingmethod;files maybeaddeddirectlytotheDVD-Rdisconerecordingatatime, insteadofrecordingthefilestoaharddrivebeforewritingthedisc. Theminimumrecordedsize, though, mustbeatleast32KB(evenifthefiletoberecordedissmallerthanthat), andcapacitiesandwritespeedsaredecreasedduetotheoverheadofcombinedlead-in/outareasanddata. Also, thedisc mustbefinalizedbeforeitmaybeplayedbackbyadriveotherthanthedriverecordingthedisc. Multi-Border Recording (MBR)ADVDwritingprocessthatisverysimilartoIR, MBRallowsyoutomakeanIRdiscand thenplaythediscbackonadevicethatrecognizesthistypeofrecordingmethod.
