Formattingadiskconsistsofthefollowing:theoperatingsystemerasesallofthebookkeepinginformationonthe disk, teststhedisktomakesurethatallofthesectorsarereliable, marksbadsectors(i. e. , thosethatarescratched) andcreatesinternaladdresstablesthatitlaterusestolocateinformation. Onceformatted, theactualavailable storagecapacityvaries, dependingonoperatingenvironment, andisgenerallyabout5to10%lessthanthenon- formattedcapacity.
